There is a speedo shop in San Antonio TX I have heard mention that did a good job on a friends later model speed (2000'ish silverado dash). Not sure if they do older stuff but it might be worth checking out. Mark from agearhead4life used them on his "shop truck" if you wanna go back and figure out the name. I just can't recall it offhand.

That is an interesting link I'll have to check out. Going to want to reset my speedo to zero once I get everything running and rebuilt. Still a ways off.

That place looks promising. The photos of work done look really good.

That’s the one I mentioned at the beginning. The work looks pristine, and they make a lot of their replacement parts in house. Their prices reflect that, though. Or maybe I’m just a cheapskate.

I guess I should have re-read the thread. A few years ago, I had the speedo cluster in my 2004 Suburban repaired for about $200. I don't think is price you were quoted is too bad, but I used to live in the SF Bay Area where everything was over priced. I don't think you're cheap. The problem is, not too many places are doing this anymore.

Yeah, it’s sounding more and more like I need to bite the bullet on this one. I could go cheap and fix the one that’s in it, but the police speedo goes to 125 (I think), and the odometer goes to the hundred thousands place, which is nice because the original one’s going to turn all the way over for the third time in the next few years. And you’re right. Electric speedo people are pretty ubiquitous, but it’s a rarity to find someone who specializes in the mechanical ones. There’s one semi-local guy I’m gonna check out, and if it doesn’t look any more promising, I’ll probably end up sending it to Bob.

The bitterness of low quality lingers long after the thrill of a low price has gone.

I'm curious to see how this goes.

The speedo needle needs calibrated in my '78. Just the needle, as the odo reads correctly. But the gauge lense is clear, the print on the gauges looks great, and all the needles are still bright orange. Honestly I'm afraid to take the damn thing apart. It would suck to risk damaging things, just to have some guy make it worse.

Sent the speedo to Bob’s yesterday so we’ll see how that goes.

Very expensive to do the work ($460 shipped), but I bench tested the speedometer, and it works well. They also calibrated it properly. It won’t work in the car, though. That’s with a new speedo cable. I’m probably gonna have to put the old one back or get an AC Delco cable instead of this Pioneer POS. We’ll see after I test the cable in the car with a drill and the other speedo. I don’t think it’s the speedo gear.
