So my older brother wanted a truck and finally started looking in the usual places.
His budget is big enough that it could have been a totally cleaned up and resto modded cruiser if thats what we had found.
But those often don't need much done to them and that isn't always the most fun.

So our parameters were pre 1975 GM to avoid the emissions demons, plus they just look cooler.
I told him to stick to the GM stuff as we know it the best and have many spare parts on hand for them.

Then one fell into our laps, it was a 1968 3/4 ton with a mystery engine and a crappy manual transmission.
The reason it fell into our laps was that it was owned by one of Max's buddies dads and he bought it to flip it from a tow auction.
But, it had a wicked knock if you were hard on the accelerator.
When it was purchased there was a mystery engine in the bed that was supposedly ready to go.
Although, with some looking you could see some surface rust in the ports.
Someone had put in an under bed fuel tank with a wonky filler neck in the rear corner of the bed.
It needs tires furiously and the upper channel of the front window needed repair soon.

But it ran and drove and looked like somebody at some point had loved it.
We knew what it was purchased for and would have happily cashed him out knowing about the issues that would need to be handled right off the bat.

Duane, the actual owner knew we were players as that was what we told his son who was showing the truck to us in the photo above.
With that information he told his son to tell us he wanted $1000 more than he paid for it and that he might put an ad up on marketplace "just to see what happens"

The market for these trucks in the $3000 range is saturated in our area right now.
So I told Jacob to tell his father we don't want anything to do with it anymore.
"They're not even interested for the 3k?"

Not even a little bit you doink.

So in the next week we inquire on a couple of trucks that would be great.
Often meeting with no response to the questions....

Then we see this ad for a 1972 truck for $6,500.

So Paul contacts Jesus Claudio and they set up a time for us to come and see it.
Paul comes to my house so we can drive my old ass Suburban to go and look at it, not his Porsche.
Gotta think of these things when you need to haggle price.

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent enough truck.
Just not for what he wants and what I am willing to pay.
Not my fault he over paid for it.

So we crawl all over the truck out in NE Portland at 7:30pm.
Kinda sketchy, but Jesus has a pretty nice house so it wasn't that bad.

This truck lived in Washington at the coast from the last registered owners address.
Somebody loved this one as well, just look at the bed.

The bench seat shows the wear, but he just got his new seat foam and cover today in the mail.
So we will be tackling that one in the future.

You can see the rockers are not the same color as it would appear that some one has already done them.
Same with the bottom of the drivers door.

It has a couple bumps and bruises on it, but it is 52 years old and a truck.

Here is one of my favorite things about it, it was ordered with leaf springs instead of the trailing arms.

It needs new weather seals on it as well as some window frame work as there appears to be a leak.

My brother happens to be color blind, so I asked him if he could tell it was two colors of green.
He said he knew it was two colors and can see the difference and to shut up...

This is the worst of it, but we are going to try the football in the door to pop it back out.
The missing paint isn't much of a bother as it will be repainted one of these days in the future...

So we took it on the test drive, or I should say Paul and Jesus went for a ride.
xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media

You can hear it bucking and snorting.
Jesus said it was just cold.
Nah bruh, it has some sort of tuning issue.

So they ran it around the block and it never evened out and they parked it.
Paul liked it and it was one of the best we have seen in that price range.
So we tried to lowball with $5,500 and Jesus countered at $6,000 as he had a whole list of others that were next in line.

Paul made a deposit and we were to return on the coming Friday with the outstanding amount.

Disc brakes and 5 lug wheels.
The tires look good, but they date code back to 2001.
New ones will be installed soon....

It has headers that are welded to the dual exhaust.
Kinda small and too quiet.
But never fear as the Portland Swap Meet is coming up in a month and I am sure we can change that.

So we drove away from Jesus taking the wheel from him.
I drove it bucking and snorting to a nearby high school parking lot where we could work on the tuning for a bit before we drove it the 30 miles home.

Max reset the Edelbroke carb from where it was set.
Then we fiddled with the timing and loose distributor and got that all set up.
But the sneeze persisted.
We watch all the YouTube fellers and when they have an issue like this it is usually basics.
So we had covered the carb and distributor timing basics to no avail.

Twas then that I remembered that the plug wires were new and I told Max to check that they were in the right order.
Sure enough, 5 and 7 were crossed up.
Changed them out and it was a whole different truck!

We then ran through the carb and timing adjustments one more time to make sure we were good to go.
Max went for a rip around the parking lot and it would spin the tires without a hesitation now!

Here the boy and his Uncle are timing the new machine.

Adjusting the carb.
We are not Edelbrock people, so a Holley will be sourced and installed in the future.
We just have all the Holley parts on hand already, so yeah....

I am driving the Porsche behind them.

We figured if the Jesus had figured out his mishap with the plug wires, that this would have cost around $2,000 more as it ran flawless all the way home on the freeway.
