Ya I found a complete kit from trans go for 242 with a Jr shift kit and vette servo all new seals and gaskets clutches and band if memory serves me right

And $50 for the Beast. $60-$70 for the Z Pack or Alto Commercial 3-4 Cluctch pack. So you're at $370 and other Misc expenses, like filter for the bare minimum I'd consider putting in it, you're at $400. So again, at $390 exchange what are you really getting? You're getting a freshened up trans with only what needs replaced fixed. But like I said, these days, you never know. Chances are your trans has been rebuilt already once of twice in it's life. What if someone already has put the beast in it? What if it has the Vette Servo already? It may have Beast and Vette Servo and a ****** 3-4 clutch pack and why it's gone bad. Just like a chain, the weak link.... If it's not covered it needs rebuilt again and again.

That's why when I build my own, it'll have $800 - $900 in parts in it and why I have not done it yet. But if you were to buy the trans I hope to build you'd probably pay $2500 for it, maybe even $3000. I'm sleeving the input drum too, hardened input shaft, upgraded sprag, super hold 3-4 Servo, Sonnax 3-4 return springs, blah blah blah, and I do intend to tow in OD with it.

That's what I thought

Not for nuthin bro, but you are into this whole mess over twice the cost now that it would have been to fix the trans in the original project and get it smogged....not to mention the SAS you have to look foreward to, and the body work.
Just my $0.02

If you feel confident enough to tackle it and you FIL has the tools to do it, give it a try yourself. If you don't, go for the $750 and a 1 yr warranty, go for that deal. IIRC, he's at least handling the bare minimum known flaws isn't he?

Where some trans guys get to make a few extra bucks is if the trans has been previously built by a good shop and it already has the Beast in it and a Vette Servo. Those are expenses I doubt they'd be willing to tell you if it had it done before. You said this trans has been built before and you seen the paperwork. Look at the paperwork and see if they itemized The Beast and/or Vette Servo. Most of the time shops will do so on the Invoice. If not, call that shop, play dumb. Ask what a rebuild on a 700r4 in a 92 costs. Then ask what does that include. If it's not mentioned, ask if Vette Servo and Beast are normally included. If so, then you can ALMOST ASSUME your trans has that stuff already and just needs the rebuild kit and Z pack or Alto Commercial Pack. If they say NO, then you can pretty much be sure it's NOT in there and needs to be this time.

Perfect !!! A 90 is a good one too. Should bolt right in. And he's 100% positive it works? It's worth more than $50 just for a core.

I won't pay that normally, but for a good 88-92 K case core with 4x4 output shaft I might if they brought it to me. The last 2 700r4 cores I bought, The guy had 2 90 model 2wd cores and I figured for getting 2 of them, I'd make the 14 mile drive, 28 mile round trip and buy them both for $60 ($30 each) which was $25 each in my book since I got 2 at the same location and didn't have to spend 2 trips in time and gas to go get them. That's the last 2 I bought. The last 2 I acquired, 87 and 89 K case 4x4 cores were FREE, one I had to pull while at work, one I had to go pick up. Normally CL price on an 88-92 700r4 2wd core is $100 and a 4x4 core K case is $125-$150. From a salvage yard, you can add $50-$75 to each price.
