Old Tractors

Once upon a time we rebuilt an injection pump for an ancient International tractor. Probably 1950s vintage. It had a carburetor and distributor on one side and a pump and injectors on the other. It was to be started and warmed up on gasoline. Then the operator used a lever to engage a piece in the cylinder head that raised the compression and engaged the injection pump and Presto! The engine became a diesel.

Cool stuff they had back in the day. The owner was a "Gentleman Farmer" who had a house on Shelter Island and used the antique tractor to mow his airstrip. Unfortunately I never got more than a low quality Polaroid of it.

Wild! Never knew there was such a thing. You also hepled me at one point with an injector pump on an old ford backhoe...

Not really old and sort of a tractor, my 86 JCB 1550b extradig. I work the hell out of it, just set a water tank today. Has a little perkins turbo diesel with a shuttle shift tranny, wish it was the 4x4 version though. Being British sort of sucks, very hard to find parts for it , finally got an equipment place here that can make hoses for it to...had to replace 6 last year, lol.

At least with the backhoe you can push/pull yourself out of sticky situations the 2wd can’t handle.

When I was a teenager years ago we had a 730 John Deere 2 cylinder diesel that used a gas pony motor to start it by engaging the flywheel by use of a lever. When that gave out we just pushed it down an incline and clutch started it with the hand clutch. The good old days!!

Ah yes, those hydro fittings. Those reverse flare fittings with the o-rings in them?

At one point in time, the company I work for had a fleet of 18 JCB tractors and 4 little 520 telehandlers. Now all that's left of that fleet is the telehandlers and one broken 3220 tractor.

Found a place that sold seal kitsch and bought a full kit for every cylinder on it , even steering cylinder, for $500 something last year. Rebuilt 2 cylinders so far, need to do the main boom next, easiest way is dig deep as hole and drop the boom as far down as it will go so you can pull the cylinder back out the bottom of the boom.

I've always liked old tractors, but I'm not very familiar with them. I'd like to have one for around home though.

The company I work for had an older (mid 70's) Case 1070 for a while. That's about the only old one I've dealt with. Well, I have some old garden tractors too.

I have a pair of Case David Browns, a Ford 3600 diesel, and a JD 430.
My favorite is the 996 with MFWD.
The Carraro front axle makes it most useful.
I have a few older garden tractors also.
My favorite is my 1981 Sears FF series with the factory loader.
Works well with my Gannon roll over box blade.

These woods built box scrapers are beef! 3/8” plate everywhere and rather than triangulated strips of flat stock down from the top link, it’s a solid sheet of 3/8” plate, too.

Looking to get a PTO chipper. Both of these run a hydraulic pump from the pto. One is 8”capacity and the other is 9” with hydrostat. Wondering if the extra $2000 ($3000 vs. $5000) is with the 1” capacity bump and the hydrostat? Anyone running something like this with input or advice?

I've got a 1930 or so Rumely DoAll. Most of the parts for it had to be made. Piston rings, valves, clutch, brake linings, drive hears for the wheels....and on and on. It took me years but it's a working tractor now.

I got a 1956 Case VAH/VAN tractor from a friend who died and his wife said she knew he wanted me to have it.

.. as I found it before I took it home .......

.... after I got it running and working. It was really in good condition --- with the exception of the two front and left rear tire. .....

.... here it is running a flat belt to an old "packer" which isn't really a bailer - because it's not rolling. You had to bring the straw or whatever to the unit and then fork it in....

I've since built a wood splitter that mounts on the rear and runs of the PTO.
Thankfully, this Case has a Continental engine in it and it has a cam-driven hydraulic pump that runs the three-point "Eagle Hitch" that was a Case version.

We had a barber in my hometown, and once in awhile he would drive his tractor into town and park it in front of the barber shop. He was by far the happiest person I have ever known.
