NP205 same for sm465 and th400???

Ok, I’m looking at buying a 1 ton dually with a 350ci motor. It has a th400 with no reverse in it so needs a rebuild. I’d rather have a 4 speed being a dump truck and wanting a manual pto. I’ve found a complete sm465 trans, bell housing, shifter, pedals flywheel etc out of a 1/2 ton np208 truck. Will my auto 205 bolt to the 465 from the 1/2 truck?

Probably not. The Year will matter though. An 84-later NP205 will directly interchange with an 84-later SM465 from any other application. A Pre-84 NP205 from a TH400 application will MOST LIKELY fit an 84-later SM465(you might have to shorten the output shaft). A pre-84 NP205 from a TH400 will NOT fit a pre-84 SM465 from any other application.

Ok so the 1 ton is an 84 with th400 and 205. Donor 465 is from an 86 with the 208. So if I read that right it should? Fit?

84 is tough... it SHOULD be a round pattern NP205 with the 32 spline female input. The SM465 SHOULD be a 32 spline output shaft and therefore the NP205 should be a direct swap for that NP208.

@Itali83 Don't forget you will need the correct 465 / 205 adapter.

'84 was still the old 10-spline/figure-8 205 in the K30.

Bah, I'm thinking backwards. Truck is th400. But either way, '84 was still figure-8 pattern 205.

All I know is that the front gear and spline coupler to attach a NP205 to a TH400 is a mighty expensive item if You go looking to buy them.

It also has a lot to do with it being the part you need for connecting a 205 to modern OD auto transmissions. You only need to turn down the index ring and it will bolt right up to a 4L80E.

Probably not the right thread, but since you are talking about the input shaft, I thought I would ask here. I just picked up a front shaft with gears that is supposed to be for a TH400, and hopefully a NV4500. I hope to use it on a NV4500 swap on my 78 K10. Do these fit all 205 transfer cases, or do I need to find a specific case for the swap?

Also, I have never opened up a transfer case, will I need any special tools, or are they pretty straight forward?

Also, these inputs use a bigger bearing than other versions of the 205 so the case will need a larger bore to fit this - either a factory case or disassemble and have it bored.

No special tools are required but external snap ring pliers are nice.

I haven't picked up the shaft (get it tomorrow) so I'm not sure of the length. Should a regular automotive machine shop be able to bore the case or do I need to take it to a regular machine shop?

I happened to be checking out an auction for the estate of a old repair shop owner, a lot of 50's parts, but happened to see a box marked New 205 input shaft for a TH400, since it appeared to be what I will need for my NV4500 conversion, I bid on it. Only paid about $60 for it and some other parts, so if it isn't what I need, I'm not out much, and should be able to sell it.

I'm still looking for parts for the conversion, and the truck won't be ready for it for a year or so, so I will keep looking for a 205 set up for a 400, but will use this as a backup. I suppose it will also depend on what it will cost me to have my case machined, and what I have to pay for a 400/205 transfer case, to decide which way I will go.

does that mean a np205 from a post 84 would directly swap into a np208 from a 85-87 combo?
