It is up to you...the 84 isn't as bad as I thought...still not 5500.

The 79 is a lot of body work...just from the pics you are looking at Inner and outer Rockers, Doors, Cab Corners, more than likely Floors. the 2k price is a tad high here in Texas, up where you are at might not be.

I would talk to the guy with the 84 and see if he would take 4k cash. He may counter...I wouldn't pay more than 4500

If you do buy the 84 I would get a set of cheap gauges from AZ, O'Reilly, or what ever you have up there to get it home. I would not drive it without knowing what the motor is doing.

I've noticed on his Craigslist add it was $5500, on FB it's $5250. But I'm doubtful he'll come down even to $4500. Still it's no skin off my back to offer and see what he says.

On the 79 I noticed no transfer stick on the tunnel, so I asked to make sure. But yeah, while cheaper it looked like a lot more work.

I gotta be honest the 80 would be the one I went for. It needs some work, but it would be better for your boy. He can load his buddies up in and go camping, fishing what ever. It looks to 1/2 ton, but I think that would be the one I'd go for. Front sheet metal can be replaced, and a quick paint job would make it look really good. It's already lifted.

This is kinda what I'm thinking as well, honestly. Hows the 454 and 3.73s going to be for mileage?

Depends on the size of the tires. When I had my Jimmy, I had a 396 and changed out the gears to 3:73s. I was running 35 inch tires, and I was getting about 14-16, but like I said earlier I drive fast, and most of the time in city. You are not going to get great gas mileage out of these trucks, unless you do a LS swap...

I'm curious if, in several years, swapping out the whole drivetrain (engine/tranny/trans) for something newer. With the 454 I might find someone to straight up swap with.

One can tell he's slowly replacing the body. Bed is done, rear doors are done. He says hood and front fenders are rusty. I wonder about the cab, floors, and frame...

He's said the gauges all work, so that'd be a plus.

Do you have any good salvage yards you can get parts from? I would ask the guy for more pics before I drove 3 hour just to find out it's a Monet...you know looks good from a distance, but up close it's a big mess...

I'm asking for more pics now and let him know where I'm at to justify. It's more like 4.5 hours. It's a ways. But it just seems different when it's in state. We've done that drive a bunch in our younger days. The wife went to Idaho State.

Sure you can, that would be a great truck to do a LS swap on, get a 4speed trans. Update it and it would give the 20ish mph you want.
