Update on the red '79, the owner said the interior was "rough", that hoses and etc needed to be replaced. He said it wasn't road ready.

Continuing the search for a decent, surface rust acceptable 4x4 within like 5 hours drive time from Boise lol

Found it. Intel or opinions on the I6? I know about the Jeep 4.0 I6, and a little about the Cummins of course, but zero knowledge about the GM I6.

Thats the one. I'm not to sure about the I6 I didnt know they put them in the 4x4 pretty cool if you ask me.
I didn't know about em either. I'm going to look at it after work. It'll probably be a 292. On other forums people have just seen the "2xx" and looked down on it, til others have pointed out how close in displacement it is to a 302 or 304.

Supposedly a good engine, we'll see. Seller says it's sat for 5 years.

I want to pick everyone's brain.

So, got a chance to look at what I'm calling Lil Red last night. I want to buy it. My wife not so much. Especially if I get it for $2500 or less.

He needed to pour fuel directly into the carb, but once it was running, it ran just fine. I didn't feel anything weird in the trans, put it in 4LO and it still went just fine. Didn't screw with the locking hubs.

The front inner fender is rusting out, apart from that everything is surface.

Some leaks, namely I noticed from the engine oil dipstick tube, which I imagine is an easy kill with a new grommet/o-ring.

Only has a heater, but the fan does kick on.

Current tires are old but lots of life on them.

Headlights/turn signals need new bulbs or work.

Rear lights work great even though the housings are bolted straight to the bumper.

The stereo that was in it had power at least, but I didn't try turning it on.

Seat has two massive rips and it looks like dried oil or paint. It's worthy of a refresh, maybe I'll replace with a 40/20/40 or 60/40.

He's asking $2900 obo.

Now for the questions for the group:

What axles and gear ratios can I expect in this thing?

The 292/3 spd auto, anyone have an idea about mpg?

Anyone made a wood bed for a short box?

How bad is a front passenger side fender?

Where do YOU all find parts at, besides craigslist/FB finds? I know about LMC, but where else is consistent?

Any time you go look at a potential vehicle, get a picture of the SPID sheet inside the glove box or on the inside front inner fender. The SPID sheet will tell you exactly what ratios and options are equipped. The I-6 is the base engine for all squares. 250 for the 1/2 ton and 292 for the 3/4 ton and up. Both are solid engines and have tons of torque while getting good mileage and smooth running. Also, they take boost REALLY well.

If you didn't want to get into it too bad, a few simple mods and a holley sniper kit would probably get you into the 15-20 mpg range and plenty of power without hurting reliability and longevity. Honestly the biggest issue for mileage would likely be the TH350, since you wont have OD or lockup. Using a holley FI setup could let you swap in a 4L60 also, which would be about the same strength, but with an OD and lockup converter. Keeping the carb, you could also swap in a 700R4.

There are wood bed kits out there. I got a set of good front fenders for mine for $50 about two years ago locally. Its only a few bolts to swap it out.
