Went to the wreckers today to look for a pair of rally wheels, ended up pulling a set of heads. Found the wheels too.
So anyway, I know I need the proper manifold to run the heads, I'm looking to see if I need anything else, or if I would greatly benefit by adding anything else.
I'm fairly new to these old 350's, haven't had a lot of experience with carbs in general but I am ready to dig in.
I currently have a Carter 625 four barrel, long tube headers, dual 2.25 flowmaster exhaust. I'm interested in adding a cam but I really don't want to dig into the heads and replace springs, deal with lift issues etc.
So basically I'm looking for the most bang for the least buck, because I have a brand new house and mortgage :hahano:

Any and all helpful advice is welcome.

a nice rv cam would do wonders if you have a stock mellow cam.

Your right, with lift comes problems, Im currently putting together a 350 with a cam thats .489/.504 lift, and to make it work, thers head machining and Springs/retainers. Its only worth it if you do all the work to the heads.

But that aside, Vortecs are basically a direct bolt on, and are good to go with a Intake. Hopefully you got the Valve covers with them. And a peice of mind, dont reuse the Newer head bolts, use the old ones, the newer ones are a torque to yeild bolt, and strech out, the old ones arnt.

If you search some of the cam sites you can see which cams require upgrading your top end parts. Usually if you stay with under .450 lift you can run stock. The other issue is RPM but if you stay under 5k RPM stock will generally be fine.

I left the hardware there, but I made sure to take the valve covers, I'm aware they're different. I think a mild lift cam should be a good upgrade with them

Vortecs are arguably one of the best flowing heads factory, the limiter is the exhaust ports, with some polishing you can pick up alot.

The best intake to use with vortecs is the edlebrock RPM series. The cam im gonna run is 1800-6200. And i might polish my Port bowls a little while im at it.

As Driver4r alluded to, he has to do some work to run his cam. IIRC the stock Vortec's max lift is .480. I would recommend calling the tech line of your cam company of choice and talking to them about what cam will suit your needs best. They will want to know the intended useage, transmission, convertor stall speed, gears, and more. They will hook you up good.

What is the specs on the cam? My guess is without a few upgrades this cam will be to much. The best intake (IMO) is the one that matched the engine and what you're trying to accomplish. Everyone wants to over cam. Are you going by the "sound" of the cam or do you want it to run the best?

Either you can use a factory TBI adapter found on BigBlock truck, but will be ment for the Bigblock TB

Or you can get an adapter play that bolts to the 4 barrel intake and then you bolt your TB to that.

Either way your gonna need a barrel intake to bolt it all together.

Im going to be running a 650Holley Mech Secondary Double pumper , Headers, Vortec heads, 2400Stall, and a th350 w/ a shift kit in front of 3.42:1 gears.

The cam matches my intentions and engine perfectly.

And ive even heard of people contacting at .460, so its hard to tell on a set of heads, its best to have them checked.

Good info. I agree, you should always check your clearances some how some way. Most common one I see is the Play-Doh method. Between different cam profiles and rocker ratios, one can never tell without actually checking.

I gave my brother the cam information. He says cam is to big and you really need a 3000 stall for that particular cam.
