I don’t know **** from shinola...

But that damper looks as big as the one on my 350–which is an 8”

The thickness, not the diameter, that and the spark plug wire holders on the back of the block. Of course, those could just be sourced from an old block and ram horns used, but this one has headers. Without a top view or some other information it could be anything, but I will side with @highdesertrange on this being a 283 or 327.

Also, I'm on board with the consensus, get a different truck and save the relationship with your brother. Deals like that with family never turn out as expected, and it's not worth the headache at all. I know this all too well, and lesson learned after being burned by mine.

Gotcha. This only validates my statement pertaining to shinola.

You guys have me wondering now so I’ll ID the block this afternoon and see. I did it years ago, and I thought the code said block x or block y, but I can’t remember which two.

This depresses me Jesse, I think your brother should just give it to you. Sorry I know this doesn't help.

Pretty sure that all SBC balancers were interchangeable, except the 400.
Yeah ,I knew that. Was trying to be sarcastic. I'm not as good as Honky. Also the small plug in the oil galley at the front of the block above the timing cover says pre 350

If I had the space... Because I have the tools and the experience, I'd be in at 750 or less.

Here I thought they all had them, just looked at some project photos and both my '72 350 and '81 350 have that plug.

Found this photo in my archives of a 283...

I have 2 blocks sitting next to me with that plug. Ones a '85 305, the other is a 350 with a 1 piece rear main.
