Have to start in neutral or hold the shifter.

Have a 76 C20 that needs to be started in neutral or hold the shifter tightly against reverse or all the way to the driver's side. The previous owner bypassed the neutral safety switch, ever since I have reinstalled the NSS it won't start with the above info. I did try to pivot the HSS as much as I could on the column without any improvement.

Assume the NSS needs to be replaced?

Adjust switch, on top of column near base or shift collar is worn.

Thank you. I have adjusted so I'm guessing it's just worn. Cheap enough to replace

Check all the bushings in the linkage. There is a plastic bushing and spring in the pivot that goes from the transmission to frame. There is also a plastic bushing on the steering column pivot. Any slop in those will make adjustment of the NSS a hassle.

You use to be able to find the bushings in the help or dorman aisle of autozone.

When I replaced the cab bushings on my ‘75 K25, all of a sudden the truck could then be started in neutral and park. Getting the cab properly aligned also put the shift linkage in alignment. YMMV.
