Gonna hone my single stage paint detailing skill on this truck. Can’t wait.

I have a genuine original paint land cruiser I am going to do after.

Older repaint.

I see "white" underneath - the original primer color should be black (unless it was built in Janesville. Then it "could" be gray).

That's good info. My '88 Burb must be a Janesville truck.

What was the last year for the red oxide looking primer?

Agree, typically black under the paint.
Also as @legopnuematic mentioned there is a plastic protection in front of the rear wheel.
Mine is original paint but I surgically them removed with some aircraft label remover.
Mine were all cracked and made the paint look terrible.
I need to remove mine, too. PO sprayed over them. Heh.
And half of the paint didn't stick.
Might have to try the stripper.

Early in the lifecycle.

They were already ELPO dipping (which is black) at Flint when I started in 1979.

Although - Janesville didn't build squarebody Suburbans. Only Flint.

For what it's worth, my Oshawa built '78 K10 is in red/orange primer.

'78 must have been the last year for the red/orange, because my '78 Burb was certainly primed in it.

I could have swore my '88 was gray primer, guess I'll look again.

Got the truck. Everything works including cruise control. Its dirty. Looks like a real old repaint, I may try to save it.

Whats up with this seam sealer? Factory?

Maybe someone may’ve reskinned the door and used panel bond?

CFSJ mentioned the "factory peelers" in his post probably referring to the paint/primer compatibility problem
GM experienced in the 80's.
I had an '89 S-10 Blazer that the paint was peeling off of and in 1993 I was sent to the local Pontiac dealership
to be repainted for free.
The shop foreman told me they would use razor blades to scrape the old paint off and re-spray it... but only
from side body molding, up and over the top, to the side body molding on the other side.
Below the molding was not included in the recall.

No clue. That white seam sealer is on a few spots on the truck including the inside of the bed at the seams.
