What do you guys think would be a good drivetrain combo to get good fuel mileage out of a K5 blazer? What engine, trans, and rear end ratio?

My dad was able to get 17-18 mpg out of his 1987 Blazer that was a custom deluxe... with basically no interior it seemed to weigh less. He has the fuel injected 305, 700R4 trans with overdrive, 3.42 gears, and little 235/75R15 tires. Air dam was still on the front bumper also.

He also drove it a lot easier than I did.

More cubic inches means more mpg's. That's just common knowledge :)

Agreed but upsize the tires. Those 6.2s got phenomenal fuel mileage and had more pep than a 305. Plus I like the way these trucks handle with the extra weight up front.

Not to start another carb debate, but I've got respectable mileage out of Holley equipped vehicles.

But the 6.2 option and 700r4 sounds like a good one for efficiency. It wouldn't be my choice at all, but I never have mpg as a priority.
