615cfm Edelbroken carb is a hot rod simple carb. Not made for MPG, a GOOD correctly sized Rochester Quadrajet with its small primates and large secondary's is a much better all around performance carb. By the way what choke setup are you running?? I foolishly blocked my intake manifold's carb heat (the passage from head to head) and running a Chevy Stock devoiced choke coil, (the one that mounts on the manifold and found my choke ingagueing full time in the cold, so you might check and see if the clock is opening and staying open.

The only tuning you can do to a carb is the choke, idle, and then you get into re-jetting and metering rods.

Chevrolet came factory with the Edelbrock performer carbureator on them until about 1965 they were called Carter AFB cs. Chevrolet replaced them with the Quadrajet IMHO opinion the Qjet is a much better carbureator and was an upgrade, which is why Chevrolet went with it and stuck with it. When Carter couldn't give AFBs away anymore they sold the castings to Edelbrock who convinced everybody they were a hotrod carbureator. They were a good carbureator until 1965 but the qjet was developed later and got improvements, for 2 decades after the AFBS were no longer being used.

I agree that a brand new PROPERLY tuned quadrajet is a good carb.
IF....................you don't put your foot into it. The smaller primaries help for fuel economy.
But over time, you'll be replacing the bushings in the shaft. (thats the up and down idle).
I've rebuilt probably 50 of them and I always go back to AFB or Carter or Edelbrock. Whatever you wanna call them. I like them because you set 'em and forget 'em.

Anyone having trouble with or worried about qjet throttle shaft bushings, they aren't that hard to fix,but to prevent the problem to begin with relocate the throttle return spring so it pulls the cable forward returning the throttle, not pulling the throttle linkage rear ward to return the throttle. The way it's set up factory there is always pressure on the throttle shaft by the return spring, then you add more pressure, via your foot and the accelerator cable when you step on the throttle.

My gas mileage has noticeably gone down recently. I have checked my whole fuel system for leaks and havent found any. In the last 13 days I have spent $120 on gas and I hardly drive. I'm not sure if this could be correlated with my fuel economy but when coming to a stop or making a turn my rpms drop almost to the point that my engine dies. I am usually pretty quick to figure out these kind of problems but I am at a loss for this one. Hope one of you guys might know the answer, thank you.
Poor fuel milage, almost dies in turns, check the float level, and make sure the choke is opening.

I've had one on my non squarebody daily for 5 or 6 years. Hit the pedal twice, start it and drive away. I've had to adjust the choke and idle mixture screws, change to the pink stepup springs. The secondary is adjustable unlike the standard/AFB carb and has annular boosters. They are somewhat of a spread bore carb, the primaries are smaller than the secondaries. Hot start issues fixed with the phenolic spacer.

Ignore the propaganda from people who don't own one.

I own 2, they are just standard performers, not AVS. Installed by previous owners. They will get removed AND replaced with quadrajets,no hurry, they do work. Just not as qood as a qjet IMHO. I used to think they were better than qjets, and install them myself, then it was holleys and then I learned qjets.

If you read he asked specifically about the AVS2 that you don't own. Not what YOU like or are gonna do . The standard performers don't have annular boosters or an adjustment for the secondary. Facts.
