Hi Everyone!

While I'm making plans to replace the rear springs on my 78 3/4-ton (another thread) I wanted to spend a little time looking for replacement parts for the topper I will have on my 85 GMC:

It's a Glasstite cab-height (with a little extra) topper, and I need to find replacement latches and hinges for the rear hatch. I tried a company online, since Glasstite is out of business, but got no reply to my request for information. Thankfully, all the glass is good and I'm sure I can find replacement seals for the assemblies once I get them out (so it can be painted to match the truck). My bet is I can find replacement hatch struts once I get them out and find a competent parts store clerk to do some research. That leaves these two parts: the latches are broken and the lock assemblies are seized up, so I need to find something that will work. Also, the hinges look like they've seen better days as well.

Anyone have leads I can chase down? THANKS in advance for any help provided.

Take Care,
Ken Snyder

Hi Ken, so there are places you can get canopy latches from but it's going to be universal. Look up truck canopy latches on amazon, and see if any of those will work for you.

For hatch struts you could just buy struts meant for a hood or back hatch, but keep in mind some of those doors are going to be a lot heavier than your canopy door so it might take some trial and error.

Hinges, if they are just rusty and stiff I'd rehab the existing units, if you really have to replace it I'd start by looking at the long "piano" style hinges at Home Depot, or calling a local canopy shop.

I bought new locking handles for the shell I have on my 84 Sierra on Amazon. The support shocks I have to have made through the original manufacturer unfortunately($36 each). My shell is a "Light Rider" brand. Works good enough for me and only paid $50 for it.

Do you have pictures of the specific parts you need? They may be identical to other brands.

Iirc, the lift struts I used on my Leer topper were from an '00-ish Dodge Intrepid. They worked perfectly. Well, they still do actually, the topper just hasn't been on the truck in about 10 years.

I got my replacement struts from a local camper dealer. If you have anything RV or Camper related in your area give that a try. The latches at the local store didn't match what I had, and I looked at various websites, too. I eventually bought some from a website, I cannot remember what it was, it was about 6-7 years ago. You probably won't find latches that match. Mine is a Stockland, and like yours, the company is long gone, but some parts can be sourced such as seals.

Struts on Amazon . Measure yours and order away. Mine were $32 for a pair couple of weeks ago. Fortunately didn’t need anything else.
