Factory Oil Cooler - What did they look like?

I think Im gonna eventually find one for gmt 400 and see what it would take to either fab or modify its orginal brackets to fit ours.

maybe it would take up less vertical space(unless turned), but would take up more of the horizontal space. Just to see if anything is damn near bolt on lol

If you look through the specs from GM Heritage, there is an option for an auxillary oil cooler on the diesels. So I'm guessing it was an external as well as the in-tank cooler that all the diesels had.

I've never seen one.

I did add a stacked plate oil cooler to the Suburban to try to pull down some of the extra BTUs from the turbocharger. I modified the mounts from the original gas motor oil cooler to support it.

I can grab pics tomorrow if anybody cares.

I always thought the 80's style aux oil coolers were common. I've had 4 Suburbans with them.

I had a friend that had a fresh rebuilt motor die on him because the factory oil cooler failed. So yes, they were somewhat common. Probably a towing package which it seems like Suburbans of the era came equipped with. Along with an airstream trailer.

12364238 is the product number of the cooler. no longer made, of course

A Suburban without a towing package? That must be a rarity, lol.

What kind of fab work did you need to do?

Not much. I used the original upper brackets and bent up the pieces that came in the cooler kit to attach it to the rad support.

My fabricating skills are a little better now, so I'd probably do something different today. But it held up okay for over 20 years.

So, therefore, it's different than the cooler in my 87 parts truck.... Which now resides in the k5.

I haven't figured the rhyme or reason for the cooler. My 454 doesn't have the tow package, but has the oil cooler. And because it did not have the tow package, it did not have the aux electric fan my 3 other 454's did. Strange.
