What's a 1 ton drivetrain? Every M1009 I've seen has stock 1/2 ton 3.08 axles, T400 and NP208 T-case..

You’re right, I brain farted that post and confused trucks. I’ll go back and edit, thanks for the catch.

Just came across this post and it appears no one gave you an answer.
Generally, when the "1 ton drivetrain" is mentioned, it includes T400 (although some 1/2 and 3/4 tons also had these), NP205 transfer case (this is the gear drive case... no chain), Dana 60 front axle, Dana 70HD or 14 bolt full floating rear axle.

The M1008 CUCVs (we called them “Cuck Vs”) were listed as 1-1/4 ton, and had NP208 (chain driven) transfer cases. But the CUCVs were not the same as your normal assembly line vehicle. Most of the M1028s had NP205s, but some were sent new to unit with NP208s.

Was a big change going from the old worn out 77-78 Dodges to the new 84-87 GM CUCVs

And then there was the old puke green K cars we had to run around in on certain details, but that is a story for another day. Lol

My point was that the all gear NP205s are generally considered to be stronger/better that the chain driven NP208s. Nothing more.

Probably had to do with the involvement of gov'ment procurement yayhoos that wouldn't know a truck if it ran them over.

Those old 208s held up better than most folks think. From privates to NCOs, they were well tested for strength. Also had a better gear ratio which was needed with the NA 6.2s, even with the 4.56s gears in the old 5/4s

Wasn't baggin on the 208s. Had one in an 84 K10 and never had a lick of problem, they're a good box. Just answering the "what is a 1 ton drivetrain" question, nothing more.
