It’s definitely running the best it has so far in my opinion, I gotta fix a few more things before I take it on the road a lot, I need to get an exhaust and finish the tail light wiring, still debating on whether or not to wire in trailer lights. I went with this edelbrock for simplicity since quadrajet are more complex than this edelbrock. I didn’t think I’d ever get one to run to it’s full potential, but this isn’t a race truck it’s mainly going to be used as a commute to work, and to beat around in some dirt. Since it’s running again I’m more willing to fix stuff. Kinda lose motivation when it won’t run lol.

I just thought what about that sea foam stuff? Could I run a little bit of that through and it help anything?

@potent rodent i know the truck isn’t running at 100% of its peak performance, but I bought it non running from some trashy place, so there’s no telling what this truck has been through, I was kinda worried about compression when that got brought up. I had it running within two days of getting it but it never ran great so it never got to go on the road, but it’s running good enough to be driven now so I’m going to try and finish the necessary stuff and start getting it back on the road after sitting 10+ years.

It could use an oil change regardless. It doesn’t look terrible but I haven’t changed it yet. It was a little dark. It’s leaking a little oil from somewhere the pan is covered along with the transmission.

I need to find the correct filler neck so I can put more fuel in the truck and put the seat in and I’ll drive it down the road later. The current filler cap is like one of the bedside that doesn’t have a fuel door but the bed is one with a fuel door. So it’s angled all wrong and I have to use a funnel but my funnel had a crack last night and got gasoline all over my amazing(not really) paint job lol. If it is still running rich could that be the float level incorrect? Or should I purchase a different set of jets/rods. The last set I got the line wrong and ended up getting the wrong set lol. My error no ones fault but my own. So it did end up leaner than anticipated. Bextreme I’ll try and figure out how to private message you if I can’t find a closer choke cable bracket. Although it fired right up, rough but idled, with the other plugs. I’ll look into getting a new set of the ts plugs after I know it’s not running rich and won’t foul my plugs.
Sounds about right. Yes, float level can absolutely cause rich condition. Also, if the fuel pressure is too high it can push past the floats as well. If you set them to the recommended float level and it is still pushing past, you might try giving them a bit more depth so they push harder against the seat.

I’m not positive on how edelbrock float and needle and seat work, but the needle didn’t just drop down like the quadrajet did, is there something holding the needle in place? With the floats dropped there was a gap between the plate on the float and the bottom of the needle. Is this normal or something to be concerned about? Now that the truck is running again I’m way more excited to work on it lol even in below freezing weather.

As the bowl fills up, it pushes the float up towards the top of the carb lid. The needle is pushed up by the float arm. As the float goes up, it pushes up on the needle and closes the fuel flow off. The float should push the needle all the way into the seat and still have AT LEAST 7/16" before it contacts the top of the carburetor. If it is able to fully contact the lid of the carb and still isn't making contact with the needle, that is 100% your problem with it running rich. Watch the video I posted earlier in this thread for step-by-step on setting the float level.

I already watched Luke’s video lol I watched it this morning, or one similar, he had a red car I believe and a 7/16 drill bit. Quite the fan of ViceGripGarage, ThunderHead289 and JunkYardDigs lol. After I figure out a solution that gives me the ability to put fuel in the truck I’ll work more on the carb, I’m trying to find a filler neck deal for the bedside with a fuel door.

I have all of that stuff too... I just pulled my dual tanks from my 1980 to go to a single blazer tank.

Here’s what the filler neck and stuff looks like on the 1980. They are different again in the later 80’s

The later 80’s ones will have the three hole mounting for the filler neck
