Sorry I missed all the trouble. You are correct, if it wouldn't go in at the right spot, you need to get a long screwdriver and turn the oil pump shaft to line up. Once you get it mechanically close enough to fire, you will need to go through and set the timing correctly with a timing light. You have to be as precise as possible with getting it mechanically at 0 or you will have a very hard time getting the timing to set correctly. Just one tooth off can make it so that its too far off to start or that it doesn't have the physical range of motion to get to the proper adjustment.

Alright when I get off work I’ll get number one back at tdc and rotate it to 0 on the timing tab and then drop the distributor in and make it point towards #1 and see what happens.

All spark plugs, labeled, and the rotor position with #1 at the top of cylinder. I don’t know if it’s compression or exhaust as I’m by myself.
SOOOT
Lol
Also is your truck supposed to take R44T?

I’m not sure if it was 180 off… I cranked the truck and it backfired. It never started. Could that be timing or it’s 180 off now?
yes u need to be on num 1 comp stroke not num 6

@AuroraGirl those spark plugs are what oreillys gave me when I asked for spark plugs for 78 Chevrolet k10 with a 350. They go in horizontally into the head not at an angle.
@potent rodent if the #1 is on exhaust stroke where would the rotor point towards? I know at tdc compression it should be pointing towards cylinder one.

The rotor will point in the opposite direction on the exhaust stroke. It takes two rotations of the crank for one full rotation of the cam/distributor. DO NOT TRY TO SET THE TIMING OFF #6. Make sure you are on the compression stroke(blows your finger off the spark plug hole) and then line up the mark with 0 on the balancer. Then get the distributor stuck in with the rotor exactly lined up with the #1 spark plug post. BE PRECISE. If the rotor is between 8 and 4, you are between 30-45 degrees advanced and the engine WILL NOT RUN. A little bit off will make a huge difference in timing.

hmm.. do you know what your engines VECI said by chance for gap? Or plug I guess.

one of these uses an extended tip, the other does not. The extended tip is going to put the zap zap further into the cylinder

not a 100% 1 to 1 here, but here is a T vs a TS, Im not sure how to know what your engine Should have but somehting to consider. I just mention because most instances of SBC plugs I have noticed have TS usually, I do believe my truck had that

Thank you, my lunch break is over I’m going to head back to work and when I get off I’ll work on redoing the distributor completely as if I was building the engine fresh

Here, is to my knowledge, my Original SBC out of my truck. It is "HD emissions" and those plugs appear to go in at a right angle to the head, I dont want to overwhelm your current load, but when you get things figured out, I would see if you can determine what kind of plug it should be using. You should be good for your current purposes tho!

That isnt too important, I am just bringing up a technicality that may help or fix an issue you may encounter down the road. Youre current efforts to get the distributor stabbed and timed are far more important than your plug possibly being too cold or hot or not far enough into the head for efficient combustion. a distributor out of time will do that itself lol. Just figured to point out something that may or may not affect things. The plugs i posted are from the AC Delco catalog for a 1978 K10 with a 350. Not sure what defines the HD vs LD

@AuroraGirl you have a point, your plugs were 46ts it appears, I’ve never cared about the spark plugs or performance since I haven’t had the truck running good enough to get into anything like that. I didn’t even gap the plugs. I always just had bigger problems so I focused on that. I have the spark plugs that came out of the truck as well. I can compare the two and see what kind the old ones were.

well R44TS and the similar like plugs do not come gapped Lol. your igniiton system didnt like you I bet. Not the end of the world now, but next plug set or if you put some back in, clean up the carbon and gap them to -.035 for HD or .045 for LD... which... maybe go in the middle till you figure out whats what. Do you have your SPID? HD emissions may be on the label.

Does your gas gauge say unleaded only?

Ugh honestly I don’t know all the abbreviations you’re using such as VECI and SPID, I might have a pic of the gas gauge I’ve honestly never paid that much attention.

Gauge doesn’t say anything. Dunno if it’s original or not. And fuel filler cap does say something but I can’t remember what. It’s not the right style for the bed, but they did say the bed has been changed.
