Gauge doesn’t say anything. Dunno if it’s original or not. And fuel filler cap does say something but I can’t remember what. It’s not the right style for the bed, but they did say the bed has been changed.
Your truck if thats the original engine originally had a HD emissions package, if you had a SPID(Service Parts Identification Label found in glovebox) which:

nevermind, apparently a 78 K10 would just say "Fuel" no matter what. That above is my 78 k10 with standard emissions, it says fuel but that must have a been a 78 thing and only would say diesel my guess if not fuel. Do you have the label to your truck? On mine its in the right column, says standard emissions. My truck "probably" would use Light Duty plug and gap, but i dont know this 100%

I MAY have the VECI (found on the stock air cleaner, tells you emissions stuff + hose routing) to this 78 k10, which had a 400. But that wouldnt be the same thing called for.

Nope, nothing in glove box, only tag on the truck is the vin plate. I have an air cleaner that came with it but I don’t believe any info on it either. Nothing on rad support either. Are there any differences other than plugs between Hd and LD? It’s a bonanza package apparently but I don’t see any difference from a custom deluxe honestly.

I got the oil pump drive at 5/11, dropped distributor in and it points almost completely forward. Did I rotate the oil pump too much? Not enough? Or is that fine? I’ve got the harmonic balancer lined up at tdc for #1

I’ve pulled it and dropped it three times now and I can only get it to fall pointing towards the brake booster vacuum line

Rotate the oil pump gear a bit counterclockwise and then rotate the rotor a bit counterclockwise as well before sticking it back in. You are still too far clockwise based on the prior cap pic you posted. Did you put a mark on the distributor base where #1 wire post is? You need to put the rotor counterclockwise a bit from that mark before you engage the distributor gear to the cam gear and then it will rotate clockwise as it seats down. You should have the oil pump shaft lined up basically pointing straight at the #1 cylinder and the rotor should end up in the same alignment once it seats all the way down.

Thanks for info, I’ll mark on the distributor where #1 on the cap would be and try again. I just took a break and ate dinner to wait on responses. I’ll try and see where it lines up and then go from there.

Much better, I needed to rotate the oil pump drive slightly more, from the Engle I was at it looked closer to 4/10 than 5/11 but I wasn’t straight on looking at engine. I reckon I’ll start putting the cap and plugs and wires back on and see what happens?

That's about where mine sits. It should be close enough to fire up at least, then you can finalize timing with the timing light.
