I bought mine new, but it was late in the year. Maybe they changed mid year.Interesting, my 03 engine was cable. It may just be the model. Mine is actually a LM7 from a Tahoe. Actual car engines may be wire.
I've also started looking. I've found several low mileage salvage titled vehicles(salvaged for body issues) for around the $2000 range. There are definitely an early year range and late range for the LS truck engines. I believe the AFM changes came in around 2008 or so. These gave variable valve timing and cylinder shutoff to the 5.3 and 6.0 engines after those years. The LQ4 and LQ9 that everyone tends to swap in are pre-AFM and were made between 1999-2007. The post 2007 6.0L has variable cam phasing and AFM. Those later years would also have a 6l80 or 6L90 6-speed auto rather than the 4L80 that sits behind the LQ4 and LQ9

I've got a flex fuel L59 out of a 2002 Tahoe and it's DBC.You'll see dbw in the earlier models with flex fuel. VIN Z
