Desperately Need Help! Extreme coolant leak!

Yeah...that's wht it's gurgling alright...

There are ONLY four bolts what attach the water pump to the blick. Tighten them with your rachet and see what happens.
Water pumps are cheap.

Okay so tighten bolts on water pump, and check freeze plug since its gurgling. So far not nearly as catastrophic as I feared!

That's the water pump to engine block seal. You're gonna need a 9/16", 3/8 drive socket, a three inch long -3/8 drive extension and a 3/8 rachet + a #2 flathead.

How does that happen? Somebody started changing the water pump!

Is that what you see??


Brings back the good days when I first started working on cars to see something this simple stump someone(no offense). Reminds me of when I first started with no knowledge.

Lucky to have the internet nowadays.

Very true! I'm lucky to experience this twice! First time around was Harleys..

Very true! I'm lucky to experience this twice! First time around was Harleys..

My first Bike/Harley experience was a jug leaking from the bottom. Rode it from Texas back home to Arkansas that way.


Lost my passion for bikes after knee surgery, hard to shift.

Tighten up that water pump. The gurgling is it sucking air. If it just seeps after that then a new gasket should button it up.

Oh and replace that hose next to the loosened bolt, it is split above the clamp. Likely another source of leakage.

Well, I tightened up the water pump. Put a gallon of coolant in. Made it about 2 miles before it started to smoke and lost power. Turned around, truck shut off. I think the water pump may be entirely missing at least one bolt, but I’m not sure.
What else could cause it to overheat so quickly?

Update: checked oil, it’s red and kinda watery.

I’m thinking that water pump is roached.
That’s the reason someone started in the first place. Replace that hose with the split in it for sure.

Now I agree you probably checked the trans fluid instead of the oil.
You cannot run a water pump missing ANY bolts.

@shiftpro he mentionEd that he wasn’t mechanically experienced in his first post.

Now you mention sputter and loss of power. Did it over heat again as well?
With a truck that’s obviously been neglected before you got it. You might be fixing problems just to uncover more while driving. The carb could still be suspect as well as the overall health of the engine itself. Typically OIL is not red. Unless it was just changed yours will probably be black. Also if the dipstick you pulled was way in the back by the firewall it’s probably the wrong one. But post a pic of the one you pulled for us.

I was thinking about which of those bolts screws into water and requires thread sealant..and left-hand fan threads.
I also wondered if you had a mechanic or a friendly service shop - is that an option?
I also want moar pix. lol.:D
