Desperately Need Help! Extreme coolant leak!

Recently purchased a 1979 Chevy 1500. Runs good, definitely needs some help. Seller disclosed that there was a coolant leak, and pointed out where the lower hose from the radiator to the engine is cracked. It is cracked right at the hose clamp on the engine end. After overheating, I pulled off and shut the truck off. I let it cool down before adding a gallon of coolant - which immediately started to pour from two different places on the engine, but not the cracked hose. This truck is my A - B daily driver and I am at a loss.

I'm sure that I'm probably one of the least knowledgeable on this forum, so please forgive me. How does one check freeze plugs? Also, I don't have pics of the coolant running out, but I can provide pictures of the area in question.

Post pics of where its leaking from.

I cant think of all the specific places the freeze plugs are off the top of my head. Front, sides, and rear.

Look like this, but plugging that hole.

Okay they're posted, however I'm not sure how helpful they'll be. You can sort of see where it's still wet.

Wanna say that's just the water pump leaking. Real easy to replace.


Who loosened the bolt?

Another note - if I'm able to hear "gurgling" from that hole where the freeze plug goes - is that a sign that it is bad?

That's the water pump to engine block seal. You're gonna need a 9/16", 3/8 drive socket, a three inch long -3/8 drive extension and a 3/8 rachet + a #2 flathead.

How does that happen? Somebody started changing the water pump!

Is that what you see??

Yeah...that's why it's gurgling alright...

There are ONLY four bolts what attach the water pump to the block. Tighten them with your rachet and see what happens.
Water pumps are cheap.

That's a freeze plug.

Just to show you what a freeze plug looks like on your block. It's not leaking.

Assume its that water pump.
