Carb sprays gas into the air?

Isn't OP using an edelbrock? If so this is the kit you'll want to rebuild the electric choke. If OP is using the other carb disregard this post.


Side note: The edelbrock 1405 normally comes with a manual choke the 1406 has the electric choke, so the original owner looks to have swapped on the electric choke. Might want to go through it and make sure it was done correctly while your at it.
Yeah, they might have swapped it out. This oart sure is a lot more pricey, but if it's the only option I might need to just wait for a paycheck and then get it. Once I have it what do I hook it up to? the switch on the oil pressure just has a hose leading to the gauges themselves.

If your short on funds and it has a cable choke already (I believe you mentioned that), use it...for free.
If it doesn't, and you're short on funds, get a manual choke kit for $11.99 and use it.

@jfrancom101 it sure looks like it'll fit the bill. Yours already has the rod and other bits so you should be good to go with that kit.

Grit dog also makes a good point about being able to go back to the manual choke but you'd have to convert that carb back to that. Probably need to get a kit or a at least a few parts to accomplish that.

On all of the edelbrocks I've had, the previous owners installed them but they've all sourced power from the ignition power source to the HEI distributor. The best way would probably be to run it from a different source so your not cutting/T'ing into your dizzy feed. Anywhere that has a keyed 12v is usable though.

I swapped my 1405 to an electric choke as well. I'll see if I can locate the manual choke parts and you can have them.

I'm setting up my electric choke and I think there may be a short in the bi-metalic coil. Could someone with an edelbrock electric choke measure the resistance across the terminals (with them disconnected from everything else)? Thanks.
It should read as almost a short. It is actually a heating element that causes the coil to turn, releasing the fast idle and opening the choke plate. I don't have one anymore or I would get you the exact resistance.

Just looked through my stash of random parts and couldn't locate the stock carb bits. I must have tossed them out during the move.

It is a pretty simple system on those and honestly I'd be suprised if it's broken. You can pull the three retaining screws off that choke cap and inspect the spring if that's intact, hooked around the pin, has a decent seal (it pulls some vacuum from the carb) it should work when given 12v.

Have that black cap centered on its adjustment points (half way between the + and - marks) and tune it in from there. Too much to the + it'll be hard to kick off the choke, too much to the - it'll kick off too soon.

Does the truck need to be running with vacuum to have the electric choke work? even with alligator clips? I saw that someone mentioned that it uses some vacuum from the carb, so I'm wondering if that why mine hasn't been working

Also after pulling off the cap to look at the coil that heats up, I put it back on and now the choke doesn't close automatically like it did before... where is the spring located that closes the choke?

I'm still working on getting the electric choke figured out. I can't find the spring or where the spring goes to keep the choke shut when not engaged. But good news! The truck is 100% running on its own (after fixing fuel pump issues, and timing, it been a journey)
Today I started it and once I turned it off I didn't notice any backfire but smoke came from the carburetor once turned off.
My timing tool is a little old and might be a few degrees of so maybe that could be part of the problem? If it is a little too far advanced? I am still saving up for a proper air filter because the one that I have doesn't fit, that might also have something to do with it?

smoke could be condensation buildup if its not running fully yet to be dry.

It can be fairly small. OE wire is probably 14-16ga.
