I think 1980 was the last year of the Big 10’s, thanks to EPA changes to GVW emissions exemptions. The Big 10’s had to wear catalytic converters that year. I pulled out my sun visor to fix the cracked vinyl, and I’m smiling at the catalytic converter sticker on the back. It’s almost as if EPA got the last laugh with the Big 10’s by requiring that sticker.

In 1980 the standard 3/4 tons also ran into needing them due to the GVWR change. That was the reason for the special high gross weight rating RPO that became available at that time. Mine is one of the 8600GVWR K20's that were made around that time... no EGR, no cats.

There was a mix master of requirements. Have an 85 K20 with EGR, no cat. Other truck is an 81 K20 with cat and EGR. Assume GVW is the decider. Both are 350 auto. Neither where originally floater so probably not 8600.
