If you buy an original style dash pad you will need the metal clips that attach it to the front of the metal dash frame. I think there are 5 or 6.
In my experience, the ones in the old dash have enough tension in them left to hold the new dash in place. It's easy to lose them during the removal process, if you're not careful though. A body shop was kind enough to help me out when I lost a clip, so I didn't have to wait for one to come in the mail.

When you put the new clips in, don’t be afraid to bend the retainer tabs that catch on the dash pad or even glue them in maybe, if they’re not secure.
I ended up removing the dash pad a couple times during install because I lost a clip.
And I think it would be way easier if the windshield was out. Although I reinstalled the windshield long before the dash pad and I did find it handy to get at the bottom of the gasket from the inside a couple times. Maybe it’s a wash depending on which part is more stubborn to install.

Classic, LMC, USA1 and others all come from DashesDirect. The Urethane Pads are terrible and the Vinyl Pads are mediocre at best. I went through 2 Urethane and 2 Vinyl before finding one that I could work with and still far from perfect. Good Luck!

I bought a Classic Ind. dash pad for our 1980 and had to cut on it to get the clips to go on and to get it to mount up correctly. It was a little effort but saved money over LMC. I think I am going to attempt to reupholster the dash pad for the 1984 myself.

I got mine from CI, but that was 14yrs ago. I was pleased with the quality and fit. I’m not sure if the quality has changed since then?

Here's a pic of my '81+ vinyl pad from LMC that I got back in 2016. Please disregard the faded door panels and mismatched instrument bezel lol.

I’m in the market for a new crash pad . I just have a cover looks good but it Wout be nice to get a new original replacement. I agree with LMC shipping is outrageous to Canada.

I got my cover from Truck and Car parts in California. Was cheaper than LMC. I ordered the new clips from them but they only sent 4 and one of them was broken. So I ended up using some from my old dash. There was no issues removing the OEM ones and using them on the new dash. Overall I am happy with the dash from truck and car parts.

I think one of the primary fit or quality issues, from reading many posts from folks who bought various ones is that the urethane dash pads are generally lesser quality poor fit.
The one I settled on (idk why at the time didn’t know the difference) is made by counterpart and described as vinyl wrapped or formed. Like OE, metal frame, foam bonded to that and vinyl form fit cover.
Just my observation

Thanks, this is actually a picture of the inside of a '85 C10, my '84 looks much different. However, these same colors do appear on '84 trucks. Here's the outside of the truck and the paint codes for it:

Did you dye the dashpad? If so what steps and brand/color did you use?

I just bought a dashpad from LMC in the "Saddle" color and it was brown, not tan like in the LMC pictures. I figured I'd dye it with colorbond.

I used Colorbond aerosol in Saddle tan on my dashpad. The reason why yours is brown and not tan is because GM never had a saddle tan dash pad from the factory for these trucks. Instead they just paired brown dashes with Saddle tan interior trim. A brown dash pad is actually factory correct for a saddle tan interior for this reason. I just dyed mine saddle tan, because I like my dash pads to match the rest of the trim. This is one of the few times I went against factory spec in an interior refresh.
