Adjusting valves....

While motor is running, back off the rocker arm nut until the lifter starts ticking...then tighten to stop the ticking..then tighten (?) turns after......I can't remember if it's 1/2 turn, or a full turn.....Was going to play around this weekend and see if that eliminates the annoying ticking noise this POS has acquired....After doing this, am I correct in assuming that if the ticking returns after I've tightened the rocker arms up, that I have a faulty lifter? It's been way too long since I've messed with this crap......

I like to adjust them with the engine not running, less messy that way. Make sure both valves are closed, and tighten them down 3/4 turn past zero lash, for hydraulic lifters. For rollers and solids, you should refer to the manufacturer for the proper lash clearance but it's usually 1-2 thousandths of an inch.

I do mine with the motor off and it never works out right. I always have to go back and redo them. One of them on my 88 was too tight. I do them over and over when it aint running, and make sure it's the zero lash I'm feeling, just doesn't work out perfectly. it's close enough to get it going, we run my 88 that way for about a year.

I went 1/2 turn on mine to stop clicking but seems to need more, gonna do 3.4 because I think 1 turn is a bit much.

My old man says you go down like a turn and it'll bog down, wait about 30 secs and it'll come back up to a faster idle and be good to go, if not then you back it off some. I never done that or tried it though.

I know that we use to go in 1/4 turn increments to give the lifter a chance to load up, but I couldn't remember what the total number of turns was needed after the ticking noise is gone....I'll try it out this weekend if it stays decent outside...I'll try it with the motor off, and if that doesn't work then I'll do it with the motor running......if I can't get it dialed in, I'll take it to somebody that has a heated shop....

I tightened my rockers until the pushrod would BARELY move up and down, then went a little over 1/2 turn. That was just to get it close, it ran fine so I never finished the right way.

Find some of those clips that go on your rockers to keep oil from squirting everywhere, or dont. Start your truck, run down the nut slowly until you hear the cylinder go dead and back it off until it smoothes out and that should be perfect.

Only trouble with a Camelbak is that the beer very quickly gets warm. And anybody who has had warm PBR can tell you, that ain't no way to treat a beer. Now chewing tobacco flavored beer, there would be a good idea..... Have we wandered far enough afield yet?

We used to put a case of Beast in the creek to keep it cool, but it wasnt near cool enough for most people's taste. So warm beer dont bother me too much. Beer flavored tobacco, sounds like a good idea!!!
