86 454 T400 out of Motorhome with 32,000 miles for $600 "SHOULD I DO IT"

I learn something new around here every day. What years would a fella look for to find one of those tall block 454s?

When I first started thinking stroker which basically means looking for cubic inches I researched the 383 for about a week and it finally dawned on me that its only 30 more cubic inches..........

After a little thought the logical conclusion was to go straight for the 454

Still Looking But I know here in the Portland Oregon/ Seattle area it won't be long and I will find a good deal on Craigslist

70 and 80s for sure, school buses and dump trucks had them. Industrial use...

If you're not in a hurry you might find a stroker kit for cheap. Lots of guys running out of money and/or selling off parts never used. I got an $1800 stoker kit for $1000. That made my day!

Thanks friend! I'll be in more of a hurry in 2 months when I get this move to Montana finished but have been known to be patient and search for a bargain. I'd be more than eager to pick up a new or used stroker kit or even a complete stroker engine if I ran across a good deal!

Basically I am in a perpetual state of 'shopping''. I'm always searching for parts even if I don't need them. I just found a SB stroker kit for cheap. Am I building a SB..? No, but some day I will and looky looky I have on my shelf a stroker crank and parts, intakes... I feel these parts are/will be like gold some day. And besides, in Canada the government is trying to get rid of old vehicles by pressuring wrecking yards to scrap older units. They way I see things...
if the government doesn't want me to have it, then I NEED it!
I do intend to have a fleet of squares for sale in the future, but first have to finish my/home/shop. Oh... I guess first thing is I have to heal my broken leg/ankle... darn thing.

Sure hope the leg/ankle heals fast! I hear you about the government and I agree there will be a period of time when a good running old chevy will be worth gold like when it costs $100,000 just to buy a damn pickup

This add says Big block chevy L-86 1973 with 4 speed out of a C60 $800.....Im guessing a possible tall block?

Yes Sir...I'm assuming both the Rods and Pistons are different to make up for the deck height difference? I will Definately do my research before leaping into that ball of wax if I do

ETA: I would be sure it turns over and even doing a compression check if you want to be really sure. I added this because I bought an engine once because it was too good to pass up only to find out, on tear down, it was junk. But that was the exception. Had friends that got really good engines at a killer deal.

Should be a 366 Tall deck. I believe L86 was the code for a 366 in the C60 paired with a a manual transmission.

Just an FYI, RV miles are hard miles. BBC's are strong engines, but 10 tons of motorhome really starts laying in to them. At 30k it probably is in need of a rebuild.

Personally, I'm holding out for a nice Gen VI L29 96-01 block. One piece rear main seal, roller cam, better intake with port fuel injection. I'd love to find the holy grail L21 with coil near plug ignition and an Allison 4-speed hanging off the back.

I have been thinking of doing the same thing getting an RV with a 454. Anybody got a suggestion what to do with the body of the RV?

I remember watching an episode of "Roadkill" they bought a RV to get the mopar 440 out of it then they had a horrible time trying to get rid of the body of the RV. They finally rented a dumpster cut it up and threw it away and it wasn't cheap.

Is there such a thing as a RV junkyard?

I tried to but the guy wouldn't return my call.....I see it reposted on Craigslist for $1200 now and at that price I will opt out

I'm set on going with a big block so I'll keep looking and eventually a good deal will come up
