I have an 82 C10. I have already installed a new Chevy Performance SP383 and have a FITech fuel injection system that I am going to install along with the G-Surge fuel pump. I also swapped out the driver's side fuel tank with a new tank and sending unit for an 87 chevy truck. I am running into some issues now as to how to wire up the new sending unit to the older wiring in the truck. Do I need a fuel safety switch along with a fuel pump relay. I am not very savvy on the wiring for a truck. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for reading.

NEED? No. Should you? Probably. Did I? No.
I wired mine up out of necessary and lack of time. I would totally do it differently, if and when, I get the time. You can get a relay kit from your favorite part store. I tapped into an IGN port in the fuse block, power straight off the battery to the relay, ground the relay back to the battery, and purple wire to the pump.

They do make another kit to add to the oil pressure sensor (not switch) that if the truck looses oil pressure, it will cut power to the pump. This is how most (if not all) fuel injected cars are wired.

If you wanted to, you could throw a manual switch inline, but if you were in an accident where you were immobilized, you would want it to be automatic.

I don't have the fitech but from what I remember when researching the systems the fitech has a pwm fuel pump output that doesn't require an external relay for the electric pump.

I also dont understand why your using the sump system, you bought a 87 tank and sending unit, all you needed was a 60 psi pump to put on that sending unit and you would have been good to go. I used the Ep381, it bolts right into that sending unit.

As far as the fuel level goes just hook your factory fuel level wire to the smaller gauge wire on the sending unit. It should be pink or orange in color. You will also need to hook up the ground to the frame for it to work.

I love seeing people upgrade to FI on these great trucks. My 87 R30 still has it's first generation TBI, and it's great.
I am in the same boat...my 82 tbi works just fine.
