I will probably just bolt it up to the one I have and save my money to buy a built turbo 400
What do you mean by "built"? As in hi performance? If it's for sure a Turbo 400 and not a Th350, it don't need to be "built". It just needs a stock rebuild. A couple little holes drilled in the valve body spacer plate and lose a check ball or 2 and it'll firm up the shift a bit. I'd go with a Stage 1 RV type shift, not a neck snapping Stage 2 or it'll beat the hell out of your transfer case. They are plenty strong and will easily handle up to 500hp in a stock build. I just ordered a rebuild kit for one of my Turbo 400's. Chances are my steels are fine so I'm not replacing them, I have common bushings if even needed already. This is also a Waffle Clutch pack kit. The waffles allow better cooling. I added new bands which I may or may not need but will replace anyway, and a new good brass filter. All less than $100 and it'll be deleivered to my front door by Friday. Nut up a bit and find a buddy that has a bit of experience and build it with him yourself.

I’m not sure that’s what he thought his dad said.

I'm pretty sure with that water pump on the front, it was once a boat engine. This also means you're going to need to buy a water pump, bracketry for your alternator and power steering pump. It's not going to be easy to get all that located and bought.

It was in a truck last after it was built, so he might have some of that stuff already.

Also I think that’s just an electric water pump. That’s what his dad said. It was in a race ranger after a boat

I ended up doing something similar with my 86 C20 after the diesel died. I used a built up 350, kept the hydroboost setup, and the TH400 with a different torque converter, and had it reworked by a trans shop to work with the gas engine better (think they only changed out the governor and some small things)

Like Hotrod said finding the brackets will be a huge PITA, I ended up making one for my power steering pump, was never able to get it lined up correctly. Would be easier but more expensive to just get a serpentine belt setup.

The gearing may be high for stock sized tires.

If it has the huge diesel radiator that is also a big plus and something to keep, even though it will take a long time for all that water to heat up so the thermostat on the motor opens without just slamming shut a few seconds later. Also finding an upper radiator hose with the correct bend is kinda tough.

It is on 35x12.5s. And is there kits for a serpintine belt? Don’t they just make brackets for the alternator and pump? Maybe the diesel ones will fit?

For gearing you should be fine then.

There are kits for a full serp belt conversion which do include brackets however they are $1200+ some people on here I am sure have pieced some together cheaply, would be worth a search, I personally have just looked into it a bit then decided it wasn't worth the change since my V-belts are working fine.

None of the brackets from my 6.2 matched up with the 350 I luckily had the brackets from the 350.

What about motor mounts?

If I remember right (its been several years) the motor mounts would work. However, I did not reuse them as they were super soft, and new ones were pretty cheap.

If staying with the Electric water pump, finding brackets will be a bit harder yet. I'm pretty sure most stock brackets mount to the original style pump in some way. Plus you'll need to have those v-belts or serp belt far enough away from the block so they wont hit or rub that pump.

Sounds like you need to have some patience and make some better educated choices. The big block is fine, and if you were putting it in a drag car the trans would be awesome, but on a 4wd truck... If maybe for a week or two, sure , that would be entertaining, and one of those things you can tell your friends about but if anything longer than that the big block will probably eat up the transmission if it is anything resembling stock and to be honest I'm not even sure you can mate a tcase up to a powerglide without it breaking the housing just from the weight of the tcase, much less fitment. Also, if you see guys with a 700R4 and a big block bitch about bad mpg's, you are going to make them seem like they are driving a Prius.

if you have to use the 2 speed then just set your tcase aside and take off your front driveshaft until you can afford to get a proper transmission or have your th400 rebuilt, and roll in 2wd mode with a custom rear driveshaft. it will be the least amount of money spent to adapt the parts you have and what is necessary to get the truck rolling.
