What I've been doing to minimize the filter mess is loosening the filter with a filter wrench, but not unscrewing it. Just loose enough that I can do the rest by hand. Then I use a screwdriver to punch a hole in the bottom of the filter so it can drain. After a few minutes I'll unscrew it enough so the gasket loses contact with the housing to break the vacuum so it will drain faster. If you position the pan right, it will catch the oil from the pan and the filter.

It's still not spotless, but not having to handle a filter full of dirty oil (remember, I'm usually doing this on a diesel) tends to keep things cleaner. Some folks even slip a plastic bag over the filter for the final remove. I'm neat, but not that neat.

Filters with really good anti-drainback valves may not do this as well, but you should be able to get a significant amount of oil out of them.

The biggest issue is the driver side exhaust needs to be disconnected, loosen the driver side header so it can be pushed towards the frame just to get the filter out.

I was wondering how you get the filter out. I was hoping it was something like "one way in, one way out" kinda deal but not having to disconnect the header completely! That's crazy. Have you ever thought about installing a filter relocation kit and just relocating the filter to a more convenient spot? It introduces more places for potential leaks but would work, I think.

That's possible but there are 2 oil cooler lines on it already, I could probably cap off those 2 ports in the block and plumb in a remote filter and route that through the oil cooler.

My wife's friend redid my z28 badge.
Looking good!

Got any idea on how she redid it? The emblem on the back of my '79 is looking faded and it has some dirt stuck in it. It's not the same Z28 emblem though, just the standard '79 emblem. Regardless, it could use some love.

She plucked the old emblem out of the plastic backer, made a sticker to put in the backer, then filled it with a clear epoxy. Not sure what she used.

That's really cool! She could probably make a nice little side gig out of restoring those and the very similar '82-'92 rocker panel emblems.
