First filing of shift housing, ready for drilling,

New pin is not tapered as I thought and measures .219 round top down to bottom.

Old broken pin measures the same.

Both measure .227 at serrations.

7/32 = .21875
13/64 = .203125
6/32 = .1875

Might need a letter or number drill.

Bottom unmolested hole in housing measures .213

Number 3 drill is .2130

Now to find a number 3 drill.

Shift rods filed as well. need to test fit.

Project on hold.

Need to go into town (25 miles each way) and get a #3 drill and have some lathe work done.

Will explain if it works. If not I'll ....... Never mind.

And the ignition key is not properly assembled.

Follow the service manual to remove and replace the ignition key. But mine has a loose part. The adapter ring was not staked to the lock cylinder which could cause the key not to turn right. Looking at mine it was not broken or had come loose, it was just never staked.

There seems to be nothing right on this steering column.

The adapter ring is the little round circle thingy. It goes on serrations up. Doesn't show well in picture.

Today I reassemble the upper steering shaft bearing. I have built a jig to do this. I tested it without the ball bearings and it snapped to two outer races together perfectly. Going back to the workshop to do it for real. Taking camera with me.

Might I add, I would never do this again, What a pain in the ass.

A lot a yelling and chasing bearings. Jig got it started. But a good ole BFH and a brass punch finished the job. It was like playing "Wack a Mole".

I used Mobil 1 synthetic grease.

Time for a break.

Waiting for wife to return with #3 drill to finish shift housing.

Gotta reassemble key assembly and install.

A little touch up paint and upper goes together.

Oh! Found the correct plastic sleeve and rubber housing on eBay for shift lever upper. On the way.

Later.

There is a lot of lining up on these parts. The bearing housing and the cover that loks them together have only one way to line up.

Gonna stop here. I want to assemble the ignition key and stuff in the housing before I install ignition housing.

This is the plastic bearing surface that goes on the housing. It'll fall off when I try to assemble the key. So I put it in a safe space.

Intermediate or bottom shaft Rag to pot joints assembled. The rubber gasket you get on line is too small at the large end. It slips right out from the retaining clip. So I took the metal ring out of the OEM rubber gasket and put that over the rubber gasket. A little BFH and it all goes together. Lots of Mobil 1 grease to fill up cavity before assembly.

So pot joint done. Now for the rag joint. I just got a kit with the rag and some bolts. Much cheaper than a complete rag joint already assembled.
