10 Bolt Rear Axle Oil Change w/ Factory Limited Slip

Well, it's at least not factory for a truck. It could have originally been in a late 70's or very early 80's GM car, like a Camaro or Caprice. I think the Nova could have had an 8.5 sometime too.

I guess it could have been robbed from another OEM unit somewhere, but I think I had already determined it to be OEM not aftermarket, and I forget now what the difference was. I also was not aware of any Auburn being OEM in trucks. Its my understanding the G80 is available since 1980 and is the Eaton Locking Differential in OEM terms, but is in Aftermarket term called Gov-Lok aka Gov Bomb since the Governor gear likes to strip teeth. Its actually a great unit for pulling a boat up a launch pad, but that's about it being its only locked to 25mph, then unlocks at speeds above that. You sure couldn't heat up your tires for a drag race with a Gov-Lok. Actually I guess you could, but it would take some doing.

Actually, the gov-loc is designed to STAY locked past 25 mph, it just won't engage after 25 mph. Too bad the setup isn't stronger, because it would be the best of both worlds.

If it stays locked past 25mph, all they'd have to do is beef up that toothed governor gear thats as big as the ring gear and it would be a good system. That 80 GMC I had, had the 12 bolt gov lock. I expected as old as the truck was it was junk by now. Nope. I jacked one wheel up in the air on a floor jack, and drove the truck the whole length of the driveway with 1 tire in the air. If was broke, or a peg legger, the wheel in the air would have spun and the truck not moved, but the wheel in the air, moved the same speed as the wheel on the ground, so I knew it was working properly.

I think it still works in my 84's 10 bolt too. If I gas it while making a left turn, it will chirp the LR tire midway through the turn.

Well I think so. Check out the original window sitcker. It says locking differential-rear axle. Guess that means limited slip??

Locking would be different than a limited slip. Maybe you got the Gov-Loc HRPC was talking about.....

NO, it should be fine for GovLok to the best of my knowledge.

Make sure you take off the fill plug first, Just to make sure it isnt seized, other wise you wont be able to put the fluid back in!!!

Good Point Alan. I normally do that myself for that reason alone. This way you know if you need to get a new cover or not before you start. Believe it or not, many times the cheapie low quality chrome covers like Mr Gasket, are usually cheaper than an OEM cover.
