    89Suburban's Man Caves

Good progress on the clean up. My workbench is made from a solid wood door. Got it for like $10 about 17 years ago since it had a gouge on one side. Made the bench with that side down. Super heavy and heavy duty.

    PVC question

Well PCV is actually good for your engine. The old road Draft tube required your car to be moving for it to work. The PCV uses engine vacuum so it always works except for a few instances of low to no vacuum. It is good to get the water vapor and extra combustion gases out of your crankcase...

    PVC question

Some of the heavy duty diesels still had road draft tubes until about 5 to 8 years ago.

    Seat recovery

My seat is the pre-made one from LMC. I'm happy with the quality. My seat was all fabric but I decided to go with the style that has vinyl on the edge and fabric in the seating area. I figured the vinyl would hold up better to the sliding into and out of the seat, that's where the fabric...

    Hood questions

Lubricating the hinges is good. I think they make a reinforce mentioned to help prevent the hood from bending. It might be for pre '81 hoods.

    Brake System Rebuild

I don't know about system performance but the std system had different brake line sizes than my heavy duty system. The parts place gave me a std master the first time and it wouldn't fit. Took it back to get the right one and it worked. The heavy duty has larger pads and shoes that probably...

Getting ready to do a major tune up.

I'd avoid running old gas even if diluted. I had an old van that I had to rebuild the carb a couple of times because of old gas. I always put fuel stabilizer in gas for my boat and lawn equipment since they can sit for a few weeks without use. The Ethanol Gas Is Nasty Stuff And Absorbs water.

    1985 c20 Distributor Issue

Mashing the pedal gives a couple of squirts from the accelerator pump, should help regardless of what type of fuel pump. Since a carb relies on vacuum to get fuel flowing instead of a pressurized spray from injectors that is important to get some fuel into the intake during low vacuum cranking.

    1985 c20 Distributor Issue

This may seem like a silly question but I'm assuming its carbureted and that you know to set the choke? Maybe the choke needs to be adjusted? My choke still isn't right but it will at least start up when cold. I only ask that questions because some younger folks learned to drive with...

Vintage VW Guy Now Has A Chevy

My fleetside has a side mounted spare tire, it goes on the divers side of the bed, forward of the wheelwell. Doesn't take up too much space. It looks a little ugly with the tire sticking up but I'm sticking with it for the functionality. You can see a picture at the top of page 3 of my...

Vintage VW Guy Now Has A Chevy

Welcome. I think you'll like the square body heater a lot better than the VW heaters. We're getting more Michigan members here on the board.

    1987 Silverado Fuel/Wiper Problems

I'd put some fuel stabilizer in the non-working tank to keep the gas from going bad if its gonna be a while before you get it fixed.

    How does the coolant flow?

I'm not sure how the 6.2 t-stat works but the one's I'm familiar with close off the bypass when the t-stat opens, but that is on newer engines. I'd put the heater on the bypass side to heat the engine side of the system first. That way the engine side of the circuit would warm up first...

    1987 Silverado Fuel/Wiper Problems

There is a line that goes from each tank to the selector valve on the frame rail. That valve then has one outlet that goes up to the fuel pump and then the carburetor. I had a post the same time as bucket.

What have you done to your square lately??

Started and drove my truck. May not seem like a big deal but my truck lives at our second home 2.5 hours away. It was last used to put away the boat on September 24. I was very happy that it cranked no problem after sitting for over 3 months. I wasn't sure what would happen since the truck...

    must have modern creature comforts?

Heated seats Keyless entry Auto down and up windows Auto head lights Probably not feasible on a square but my dd has push button start and doors that unlock/lock by touching the door handle. I don't even have to take my keys out of my pocket to get the remote. I thought it was a gimmick...

    Suburban Third Row Install

My square lives on the west side of the state. That's why it's not too much of a problem only having a 3 person vehicle. It's a spare vehicle at a second home. Not like it's driven a lot. Mostly in the summer, maybe once a month in late fall and winter.

    Suburban Third Row Install

Bob, I just saw that one on CL as well. I really need a CC or Burb so the whole family can go when I tow the boat. The gas mileage is even worse when I have two vehicles going somewhere.

    West Coast Mirrors on square?

They were an option from the factory. There are two types I think. A small type with a small tripod type mount and a larger style. Mine truck came with the smaller DF2 Exterior Camper mirrors from the factory but had not mirrors at all when I bought it. It now has the dumbo's (D44/45)...

    New Guy-84 C-10 Questions??

Welcome, dual tanks were pretty common. Most non working gas gauges are a bad ground. Do a forum search for some good troubleshooting threads. It could also be the tank switching valve. Is the option code sticker still inside the glove box door? You can figure out the trim level based on...

    Which radiator hose

I was looking through the info package I downloaded from the GM historical website. In '86 (my truck year) the biggest 454 radiator is 537 sq in frontal area and the 6.2L had 646 sq in frontal area. There are also thickness and distance between tubes differences depending on std or heavy duty...

    Knocking under load/hard acceleration

Another noise that can sound like an engine lower end problem is a loose clutch/flywheel or pressure plate or the torque convertor is not properly bolted to the pressure plate. The other symptoms seem to indicate it's something else but its worth checking.

How do you guys battle rust?

My truck has an automatic underbody oil application system. Also known as an engine oil leak. Leaves a nice fine coating under everything back of the engine!
