Tow Trucks, Wreckers and Car Hauler Discussion

We have been keeping pretty busy. We don't use our medium duty all that often (it's a 97 with about 110k on it) but it is nice to have when we need it. I don't do a lot of recovery work so I don't get a lot of experience with it. I typically grab the light duty wrecker for my recovery work...

Getting it loaded and hauled off wasn't the issue. Waiting for all the parties involved to pull their collective heads out was. I was into it for almost an hour before they decided to let me do my job.

Well, had my first big screw up today. Got called out for an extraction. Lady says her accelerator stuck and she ended up straddling a curb, running over a Meter box, and rubbing up against a tree. Our weekend guy got the call earlier in the day and mentioned that one of our competitors (whom...

True enough on the Hourly pay. Honestly I don't have a lot of experience with disabling drivelines. I was taught to just take them loose at the rear u-jont, tape the caps and bungie it up out of the way. It just surprised me that the spline joint slipped apart so easily but absolutely did not...

Tow Trucks, Wreckers and Car Hauler Discussion

Interesting week so far. Monday I had a call from a guy that had been driving 300 miles on Sunday in his 2000 Navigator. About 5 miles from home his Oil Light started flashing. About 1.5 miles from his exit (2.5 miles from home) it starts making noise. He manages to get it home where it...

    OEM yellow moulding

If I get around to doing the body and paint I wish to then I will have most of the trim off my truck that is mostly unmolested. I did take a bit of that paint off a few places with a hot water pressure washer but I think the pieces you are looking for are intact.

Had it been a busy day and a AAA call I would have called dispatch and been done with it. It was a private call on what had been a slow day. This would not have been the fiasco it was if the customer hadn't been spending all his time on the phone with a SALESMAN in a different COUNTRY! Once...

PITA Call today. Went to lunch for a change and was 20 min in when the office called for a Jump start 3 blocks away. I get there and the old man starts telling me to get my cables out for his 2011 M-B B200 (Canadian model). I told him to slow down and show me what was going on. (Jump starts...

WTF?!?!? The manual walks you through how to override the interlock. You get to it through the cup holder ahead of the shifter. Similar to other interlocks the difference is you have to rotate the handle and hold it. If you release the handle handle it springs back into the locked position...

BMW X5 is a PITA. It is actually a 2 person job unless you have remote control for your hydraulics. There is an override but it has to be held in position or it bounces back.

Yeah, but the electronic shift models can be a bit different.

I usually start with checking the manual. Some of these have an override to get them into neutral. Worst case scenario I'll skate it up.

Like I said, I get his point on it. I just had a problem with the idea of a medium duty wrecker for a Saturn in a vacant lot. I did do some research before running the call though so I was fairly confident in what I did. Still funny to just drive the car out when it was pretty stuck like...

Difference in this case is I spoke with the member before leaving and had a very specific location. There was only one spot there she could have got stuck without putting it in the bay. Boss was thinking they had to have "jumped" the parking lot.

I get what he is saying about not being the right truck for recovery, but this was never going to be a recovery call. I knew the place where she was stuck and there was the possibility of some mud but she wasn't far enough in to be a serious issue. I've loaded tows that were stuck worse in...

Tow Trucks, Wreckers and Car Hauler Discussion

I figured I should resurrect this thread since I keep hijacking HRPC's pic thread without posting any pics. :D Yesterday was a slow day. I pulled our small wrecker in at around 4pm and started tearing into some bad wiring at the rear of the truck. I found the broken wire and had to go back...

Think my VW Golf TDI is totaled

I know I've towed more Audis than I thought I would. Several of the owners swore they would get out of them if they could. One lost $20k to get out of his.

    Custom Tie-Down Anchors

Very cool design. If the idea is for ratchet straps they will work fine as is. If you want to run rope though I would increase the radius on the edges to help protect your rope. Just my two cents.

I'd use a magnetic switch rather than a plunger type. You don't have to make contact so your tolerances don't have to be so tight.

    97 burb transmission woes...

Honestly, I'm not a fan of doing a salvaged transmission. In this case, having only 60k on it, I would seriously consider it. If this won't work out, and it sounds like it might not, I will probably go with a rebuilt unit through work. That would run me about $1300+ converter and tax. The...

Ok, so I found a deal on a `02 4l60 + t-case out of a Tahoe with only 60k on it for $400. What do you guys think? Will it work? HotRodPC, What say you?
