    QJet Questions

From the sound of it, you have a carb that pre-dates the MC Solenoid. If so, there's no cutout for the solenoid. No insert is missing. Unless the choke coil is physically damaged or corroded, it's unlikely that it's bad. But yes, you can put 12V to it and watch it move. Joe

    HEI module dwell time.

There is definitely a difference between Delco Modules and all others. A Delco will always saturate a Delco coil correctly. It will vary dwell based on RPMs and available voltage in order to make sure the coil is delivering maximum voltage. They can vary the dwell in 1 degree increments. The...

    Weird Electrical Problem

Get your hands on a test light. When it dies, keep the key in the on position, check for power at the HEI, all 3 wires on the alternator and all of the fuses in the fusebox. Once you have the list you'll have a really good idea of where the problem is. Just see what circuits are missing power...

    Parasitic draw

It's a common goofup to measure draw with voltage. It doesn't work though. It's kind of like saying that you're 6 gallons tall, or that you weight 50 inches. If you're using a DMM with really high impedance, they'll always read close to battery voltage if you put them in series with the...

    700r4 stuck in 1st gear

Maybe governor gear is stripped off and it isn't spinning. Lots of possibilities on that trans though. Broken sun shell 2-4 band not applying servo troubles jammed valve body just to name a few.

Oil shooting out dipstick when driving over 50mph

When the engine runs, combustion gasses get by the piston rings. It has to escape somewhere or it would pressurize the crankcase, like out the dipstick tube. When those gasses got pumped up the tube, it would take plenty of oil with it, and if the dipstick ends below the oil line, then it...

Oil shooting out dipstick when driving over 50mph

I'm sure you meant oil cap, nit the gas cap. If not much oil is pushing out, then that lends itself to the diagnosis of a plugged PCV. Losing 2 quarts of oil though points to bigger problems. If you get tired of guessing at it, stop over and we can diagnose it. I'm kjust north of Greensboro. Joe

    New Gears Sing a Little

I agree with the others in that a slight sing on decel is nothing to worry about. On a silly side note, my Dad bought a 1973 C10 when they first because available. It was a bare-bones truck. Straight six, 3 on the tree, no power steering. From the day it was born the diff in that thing...

Oil shooting out dipstick when driving over 50mph

With the engine running, take the oil cap off. Does it pump a lot of air out of the hole? If you're not sure how much should be coming out if there, compare it to another vehicle. That will give you a rough idea, but it should be a very low volume, and under no pressure at all. Where are...

Oil shooting out dipstick when driving over 50mph

Either your PCV system is totally plugged or you have so much blowby that the PCV system can't keep up. Check your PCV system and then run a compression check. If you're pushing oil up the dipstick tube, you're going to find you answer with those 2 checks. Joe

Which one to pick, TH350 or TH400 ?

While the TH400 has some more mass to it, there's no real HP losses with running one. Plenty of dyno numbers on youtube to verify if you need feel like watching it. The argument comes up over the TH700 and the 4L80 when guys are LS swapping. If you're towing, I like the TH400. It's not like...

    brake lights no worky!!

Remember that brake light power has to go through the turn signal switch in order to get to rear bulbs. They do this so the same bulbs can be used for both turn signals and brake lights. So your next move is to check brake light input into, and out of, the turn signal switch. So that would...

1987 c20 New fuel pump, injectors not injecting

Do a quick check to see if you have spark. If the ignition module or pickup coil went bad you wouldn't get an injector pulse. In order for the PCM to fire those injectors, it needs to see a 5V pulse from the module on the purple/white wire from the distributor, so it might not be a fuel...

Vintage air versus LMC A/C Kit

The OEM ventilation system is a lot better than the add-on ones. OEM blends in outside air to control temperature, which gives you better temp control and helps get moisture out of the truck. It makes a big difference when you're trying to clear condensation off the windows. I put a Vintage...

    700R4 or 4L60?

For me, it is the 1987 and newer TH700. GM made a bunch of changes to them by then, including the auxiliary valve body, and they had a good chance of survival if you built them right. I don't like to build anything older than that. Joe

    Th400

Yes, it's the same yoke as the TH350 and the TH700. And I imagine you're right. GM did it to save money. Joe

    Th400

I believe it has a TH375 in it. Looks like the TH400 but has the TH350 output shaft. If that's the case, you'll need a new yoke on the driveshaft to make the TH400 work. Joe

    Starts then dies

    1) Confirm you are losing spark when it stalls 2) See if you are losing B+ to the distributor when you lose spark. If you are losing B+, then chase that down. 3) If you have B+ to the distributor when it dies pop the distributor cap and rotor off. Give the wires from the pickup coil to the...

Need help with oil pressure 87 tbi 350 with TH400 trans 4x4

#1, As recommended already, it's not terribly important what weight oil you use. I'd run 10W30 with that oil pressure though. It's good pressure and providing plenty of lube and the lighter weight will help a little with the fuel mileage. #2, Love that truck color scheme. Funny enough, I was...

Why won't my TBI 350 run right??

Last one I had that acted like that was because the port for the MAP sensor was plugged with carbon. You'd hit the gas but the MAP sensor had a real bad time delay beofre it saw the vacuum drop. As a result it didn't add the fuel it needed to for proper enrichment. It's fast and free to check...
