    Z24, finally own one

If it's in Ohio it's almost close enough for me to consider buying. If you sell it that is. I wouldn't mind replacing my Lumina with something like this.

    Project 383

The budget Vortecs are great... for a budget build. You can get new ones for around $700/pair, yes. But they are 170cc intake runners and limited to around .480 lift, and they need a dedicated intake. This may or may not support what you are looking to do, I can not answer that. You can...

    Project 383

What kind of power are you looking to make? Where in the rpm range? What is your budget for this build? And please dont say as much power for as cheap as you can....

If it was closer I would be all over that! Seems guys around me believe Burbs like that are worth at least $4K.

    Oddball factory tach

The 78/79 tachs have the redline as you describe. Not necessarily oddball, just uncommon. I have one like yours.

NOT a cummins swap, not even close

One reason I asked if you have done research is because I don't know a whole lot about diesels! I don't know how much parts are, or even what parts you may need for that matter. If you are planning on keeping it or not can play a role on the proce point of things. If you were committed to...

NOT a cummins swap, not even close

Have you done a lot of research on doing this? Do know what EXACTLY needs to go into a 6.5L build to get the power you want? Both parts and $$? Are your figures realistic? Are you going to keep this vehicle for a while after its done? I ask these questions because you are 16, and you have...

    Source for Tachometer Repair

And if you know how to test things and can do the soldering, you can probably do this repair yourself for pretty cheap. I have neither abilities, so I will gladly pay the $45!

    Source for Tachometer Repair

From all indications, mine is a '78/'79 tach. Before that they had no redline indications, and after that the font was changed. Here is a good link for tach info... http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/interior/factory%20tachometers.htm

    Wifey Bought A Suburban

Tune is definitely a must! I just went for ride in my buddies '01 6.0, and wow! He bought HPTuners and is messing with it himself, but with just the small tweaks he has done, it is a completely different truck. All he has done is reduce Torque Management, changed shift points, disabled...

    Stupid valve cover gaskets

If your problem persists after doing all the suggestions from everyone else, throw the gaskets away and use RVT. My truck hasn't had valve cover gaskets in over 20 years at least, and never leaks a drop!

    Source for Tachometer Repair

Got a factory tach that does not work properly? Scared off by the $100+ pricetag usually associated with the repair. Well... I found an alternative! I was browsing the classified forums at thirdgen.org, and ran across a guy that fixes tachometers, for $45! Being the ad was on a Camaro...

    Tach not getting enough power

Where are you getting power from? I looked at my wiring schematics, and located the terminal on the fuse block under the dash that the tach would have been connected to, if my truck had a tach from the factory. I used this to power my Sunpro, and also hooked to the ground that was located...

    Roller Rocker Arms

I completely agree about price vs potential catastrophe. OP was looking for cheaper so offered those choices. Looks he went a goocd route in the end.

    Roller Rocker Arms

What kind of rpm's do you normally turn? If you are not turning high rpm's, some steel roller rockers should be just fine. I have been following some on ebay that are in the $130-$170 range for a full set. Admittedly, they are NOT name brand, so everyone will tell you to stay away from...

    Can I run just headers?

You can always buy the headers, but wait to put them on until you can also afford to do the complete system in one shot. It will suck having new parts laying around that you want to put on, but it will also be great motivation to save faster to get it completed.

    87 Silverado 5.3 vs sbc 400

Welcome aboard! Great site with great people that can help you out. I would stick with bigger torquier 400 myself. I am not on the swap-an-LS-into-everything bandwagon.

    Can I run just headers?

I would at least try to rig up some type of muffler immediately after the headers. Even if it means using your old mufflers. At least kill some of the noise.

possible 350 with 305 heads. looking for help on if i should

Yes on the cam either way. The heads could go either way to be honest. Do you know exactly what heads are on the 350? What cc chambers are they? Maybe going to the 416's won't yield any higher of a CR. Some 305 heads flow better than 350 heads, some don't. Get accurate numbers...

possible 350 with 305 heads. looking for help on if i should

The cam will definitely be better than stock. The heads are another story. This is what I believe about the 305 head debate. Putting the stock 305 heads on a 350 for more compression is a waste of time. Yes, you DO raise your compression. But in STOCK form they have worse air flow than...

    8.5 mpg

With an '83 you should have a TH350 or TH400. If you do mostly highway runs, your engine could be running around 3k rpm. This will kill the MPG, especially due to the non-aerodynamic nature of our trucks. Doing a good tune up (wires and plugs) certainly won't hurt. Freeing up the exhaust...

    Ls1 block score!

That power goal is certainly achievable with your current small block. Here is what you should do, IMO... Price out a plan going both routes. Price out all the parts you will need for your current engine. Heads, intake, cam, headers, etc. Get a true accurate $$ amount. Then do it...
