Thanks guys. I am glad to be a part of this forum, I have a lot to learn about these bigger 4wd trucks. All I ever had were C10's, so a 4wd C20 is a new animal.

Lol. Well, the first thing to know is that the "c" designation is for 2wd. Your 4x4 is known as a "k20"

Oh yes, my bad. But didn't I hear that an '87 is technically an R20? I rarely hear anyone mention the "R" designation, but I see it come up every now and then. What's the deal?

GM wanted to transition the C/K designation to the upcoming GMT400 series but there was going to be an overlap with the continued production of Blazers, Suburbans, and 1 ton CCs so the '87 to '91 squares received the temporary R/V designation. @bucket has mentioned that the GMT400s were supposed to come out in '87 and if you check the tail lights on the '88 pickups they are stamped '87. (so your '87 got a "V" series designation even though the switch didn't happen until the following year)

Yep in '87 they referred to the 2wd as an "R", and 4x4 as "V".

Really good stuff. Not sure how or where I would have gone to figure that one out. You guys know your Chevy trucks, it's good to be here!

I've actually never been in the habit of calling them the proper R/V designation, I just stick to the C/K. Same with the 10/20/30 thing. It has sometimes caused confusion when I go to the parts store counter and forget to tell them the right model. I usually get "the computer doesn't list a K20 Suburban in '88" and then I remember my bad habit. On the other hand, if they say "do you mean a V20? then I know I'm dealing with a decent parts guy.
