Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Well, so I thought. Drove it to work yesterday to get it out on the highway for a bit and really give it the old Italian tune up. Got back and was messing with some carb adjustments when I noticed some white smoke coming from the exhaust and my upper rad hose was hard again. At this point, I'm...

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Figured I'd close the chapter on this. Swapped in new temp sensors (one in the head and one in the intake) and everything's running good now. Sits at ~170-180 degrees with the head sensor and about 10-20 degrees hotter if I connect the wire to the intake sensor. Still no idea how or why the...

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Ok, so I managed to get some time to work on the truck this weekend. New radiator, hoses, cap, and thermostat all in and the system burped. I noticed during the burping process though, that the t stat (180 degrees) doesn't open until the gauge reads 240ish so I'm thinking maybe my sensor is...

    350 tbi running too cold

Thats my plan if the thinner core rad doesn't work out. Hoping the 1-1/4" core will lower the coolant volume a little and reduce cooling capacity to help keep temps in the 190-200 range. I never thought I'd be dealing with an engine running too cold lol

    350 tbi running too cold

Good to know. I looked them up and its nothing but negative reviews and people saying to toss it in the trash. guess I'll follow suit

    Rochester Quadrajet Woes

IMO, it might be worth it to rebuild as the kits are pretty cheap. I just ordered an ACDelco rebuild kit off amazon for like $30. I also try and pick up old q jets off marketplace or from the junkyard when they pop up for cheap just to have parts or spares around if I ever need them. If you're...

    350 tbi running too cold

It looks like those tabs lock the stat open once it hits the set temp. I'm assuming they open up when the truck fully cools down to let the stat close. No clue as to what the reason was for it or why it was there

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Your comment had me thinking all day about leaking fuel bowl plugs so I pulled my q jet when I got home and sure enough, fuel bowl plugs were leaking I have a standalone wideband afr gauge

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

So I haven't dove into adjusting the carb since the overheating seemed to be a bigger issue. Timing probably needs some attention too. I think I set it at 12 degrees initial. I probably need to rejet the carb since the truck came from Texas and I’m now in Colorado

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Yes, I had a 195 in there at first, but once the issue popped up, I swapped a 180 in it. I have a couple spare thermostats from just being around these trucks for years so I can try a couple more

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Appreciate the advice. Carb is running 11-12 afr at idle and will still get hot though

    350 tbi running too cold

So this was the t stat that was in there. Looks like there are tabs on the side to “lock” it open once it opens which probably explains the issue. New t stat seems to be working but still oscillating between ~175 and 195. Better than before but still thinking the radiator is working too well

Dang that’s good to know. No pics unfortunately so it looks like I’ll be removing heads after all. Might as well at this point if I’m unsure

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

So this is the head gasket i installed https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-8523pt1?srsltid=AfmBOoqKjwZCwCNBFoqy5SGy47TxySTww5rLZt6keGc9_zXksOAgfKAa The truck sits on an incline in my driveway (front up) and I've bled it for like 30 min so far. I'll bleed it again once i install the new rad...

    350 tbi running too cold

So even if I can watch the temp climb to 210 or a little past on cold start then basically drop down to 170, its a bad t stat?

    350 tbi running too cold

Since everyone's been helpful with my big block issue, i figured maybe someone knows what's going on with my small block. TBI 350 in my suburban, 195 degree thermostat and a new spectra CU730 radiator (19" tall with a 2-1/8" thick core). The replacement radiator matched what I took out which...

Sorry, meant 045 heads. I have another set of 049 cores sitting in my garage waiting to get some love.

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Yeah, Got that installed and currently have a 180 t stat. I dont think it was boiling over. sensor was in the head prior to me refreshing the motor, but i switched from 049 casting heads to 781 heads. I figured the heads would be hotter, but it sat at right under 210 before this with the sensor...

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Sensor is in the head. It’s a new sensor too and I verified using my ir heat gun. The external head temp was reading around 235-245 Thanks for the tip. I’ve got probably 5 or 6 t stats sitting around my garage so I’ll try that with one of them. Radiator got delayed so hopefully one night this...

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Interesting. I thought it said 4 row on the description. Oddly enough I just slapped a similar radiator in my suburban with a 2-1/4” thick core so if this one is thinner, I might just put it in my suburban and put the suburban radiator in the k30 since they both are 19” tall radiators

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Not sure what was in it originally, it appears to be the original rad. I ordered a replacement off rockauto https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/fvp,RAD730,radiator,2172

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Ok well I verified that I have the belt routed correctly around the pump and that my pump is in fact reverse rotation so no issues there. Pressured up the system again after I drained coolant and no obvious leaks other than some loose hose clamps. I managed to poke a nice little hole in the...

I’m planning on pulling it and taking the cover off to inspect. Once I get home I can snag some pics

Big block running hot. Can’t figure out the issue

Cruise is around 14-15. Idle is 11-12. It gets hot whether I drive it around or not. Not sure on total timing. Vac advance is hooked up to manifold vac Not sure, but it was running right under 210 before I took it apart about 10 months ago
