Probably depends on what you're doing. We used to have disposable gloves at work, that fit me well, and I had kept some back to use when doing messy jobs. Then the supply company changed vendors and we don't have that brand available anymore. And I had used my stash while awaiting the new shipment of supplies. I kind of understand why the company keeps changing sources because it's incredible how much stuff we go through every week as a crew, so they want to keep costs down. But the current brands of gloves are so cheap and thin, we can tear them putting them on.
But I can definitely see the usefulness of wearing gloves to do lube, paint, cleaning, etc. especially if you have sensitive skin. Makes cleanup much easier too.

Been wearing Raven or Challenger gloves for decades. Required when I painted cars if you want to stay alive that is. Doing mechanical my hands cracked from washing too many times a day. It's also much easier and quicker to remove the gloves for road tests, interior work or using a keyboard than washing up every 20 minutes. Dexterity with tight fitting gloves is decent enough.

For someone doing occasional work no gloves are fine. Doing it all day is another thing entirely. Besides my fingernails stay cleaner.

I wear latex gloves about 50% of the time but definitely always if I’m working with grease or oil.

I like for my wife to get her nails and hair done, she looks nice and feels good. I figure I can somewhat reciprocate by not having nasty nails and stained hands.

no glove, no love.

gloves nearly 100% of the time. with the nerve damage from shoulder down, it's kinda obligatory.

i do have scars on my hands even though they were gloved from my time in the service.

my wife has told me often she likes my un-pretty but un-calloused hands.

:)

I try to use nitrile gloves as much as I can for drivetrain work, but have to use the large HD gloves from Harbor Freight so that they last through some wrenching. The lighter weight nitrile gloves tore too easily, and the smaller sizes are a PIA to get on and off.

I use fabric gloves from HD or HF if I’m changing tires or other work that does not require much dexterity. It’s really nice to come into the house and only have to rinse your hands off and use light soap to get them clean enough to eat, or to head out for another errand.

I do probably less than 50% of the time, but always do if I’m working with something like acetone.

I’ll take the advice about the HD gloves from Harbor Freight. One of my major gripes is that I spend more time changing torn gloves than I do working. They’re also prone to get reallly sweaty if I’m in the garage on a hot day.

FWIW, my wife says she likes my dirty Carhartts and when my hands are greasy. I don’t know, guess that’s how she rolls.

I didn't start out wearing them, and I was kind of resistant when they started becoming a thing. However, considering the n@$ty chemicals and petroleum products we work with, and people developing weird diseases I finally gave in and started wearing them.

Once I got used to them I started to hate working without them. Now that I do a lot less shop work I sometimes lapse back into old habits, but I generally use them.

Oh, and definitely nitrile. Working with petroleum, particularly diesel fuel, makes them melt.

Honestly, I’ve never worn a pair when working on vehicles. I understand their purpose but hate to have them on my hands. I’m training to be a diesel mechanic and even they don’t require them. Maybe it’s a good thing and should start protecting my hands while I’m young but they make it harder to work with them on. Plus, I just like that feeling of dirty hands. Gives me a pride in what I do.

Happy wrenching!

I R&Red my front drive shaft on my k20, and replaced the pinion yoke seal on the front 4x4 axle. Cleaned the crud off washed and painted the front yoke, polished the seal surface of the yoke before replacing the seal and reinstalling with bare hands..... and my bare hands barely got dirty. :happy107:

Gloves are a pain in the arse and cause more of a mess and wasted time. I wore those then rubber/nitrate/latex gloves a couple times and they get holes/ rips in them and your hands get more/worse dirty anyway and then you got to try and take these stupid gloves off and try a throw in a trash can with out making even more of a mess and then try and put new gloves on your already dirty hands from the ripped gloves, what a waste time.
