Got the steering gear back together. Getting all the ball bearings back in is a B I T C H!. Had to do it twice. The front cover lock is a big pain also. But all in all it isn't that hard. Just time consuming. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 6. I'm very pleased with myself. I'll never buy another steering gear, I'll rebuild from now on.

After doing some items on the honey do list I was able to get the truck painted.... well the base color painted. I still need to do the other color for the rockers and the cab roof. This is GM Medium Sage Green from 2003 Avalanches and other vehicles. The roof and rockers are going with GM Covert Tan that was used in 1972 on muscle cars and such.

with the silver and chrome I think it should be a good looking truck. When deciding colors i kind of ran through all my vehicles in my past I have never had a green truck... finding a green that I liked was challenging :)

I would satin clear that, and rock it. Looks good!

good to hear. I'll keep an eye out for a spare. Was thinking about the redhead, but dang at $316 (plus shipping) w/core. I'll make time for half that.

That's a WONDERFUL choice of color! I'm a big fan of dark metallic greens, especially with gold toned metal flake (as opposed to the typical silver or blue).

I've thought about rebuilding my own too but was curious what you do if there's excessive wear in the worm or a few of the balls? Redhead an a few other places make a big deal about fixing that an say most of the wandering issues are caused by that.

That color is badass! It’ll look great w the covert tan.

There are replacements parts, that can be bought. I don't see how a solid steel worm gear can wear out with the ball bearings being the only thing riding in it. Maybe if the inside of the case would get bad grit in it. My gear box sat outside for better part of a decade, but it was fine on the inside. A good cleaning will take care any grit you might have.

I also did my own, just requires patience & concentration! After I aseembled it & put the seal & cap on, i found a bearing on the floor! Sure enough, it was short one when I disssambled it and counted them. It;s also a bit tough distinguishing between the black & shiney bearings!

Took a ride over to my mom’s place to give her some help. Turns out, Flowmaster 40s and headers tune out the volume of life pretty well. I was working at the bedside in the hospital until 1am, a cruise on a dry day was a real treat.

I rebuilt mine a few years ago because it was leaking around the input shaft. I did a full rebuild and then did the proper adjustments per the original instructions. It was a little bit tighter and didn't leak for a few months, but then it started leaking again worse than it had before. I finally just did the redhead replacement because I didn't want to take the time to rebuild it again. It was a MASSIVE difference in feel going down the road and also in ease of turning and hasn't leaked again since. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Yes, that truck is Killer. God bless you for being there for your Mom, that's a tough part of life. I know being in the truck for a ride felt great for that.
