I got rid of my truck again because I kept finding more and more rust, and the aftermarket and used parts market for Action Liners isn’t as amicable as what we deal with here. I hated because I loved the stupid thing, but for a Mississippi truck, it was really bad. I was looking at core support, inner fenders, battery tray, fender tips, inner and outer rockers, a tailgate, a good chunk of the outer floor pan on either side, and a bed corner that would have likely had to have been custom made. I wanted something a little more ahead than that. Maybe the third time’s the charm. My brother’s got a square body project that he’s been too lazy to finish (it’s all kinda half ass gutted and taken apart), and I’d like to take it off his hands. I’m thinking it’s worth $750-$900, but he thinks the bottom line should be $1500, and it’s worth 2000.

It’s an ‘86 K10 frame and interior, a late 60s/early 70s 4 bolt main 350, 700R4, NP208, and a 1982 C10 body and wiring harness.

The good:

. Lots of parts when you step back and think about it
. The frame and interior from the ‘86 are in pretty excellent shape, and they were in Hurricane Katrina
. Rust free cab on the ‘82 as far as I can tell
. Relatively little electrical hackery in the cab, and it was well equipped from the OEM.
. It had a real nice Quadrajet purpose built for it two or three years ago (now sitting there rusting)
. Some spare parts that could at least recoup some hamburger money.

The bad:

. I built him that motor (with his “help”), and it’s sat out there under a carport in the weather for several years. It was never ran, I don’t know the cam specs (supposedly an LT1/LT4 cam but that doesn’t tell me anything), and it has fuelie heads, which could go either way. The motor needs a few things to be right even if it was stored properly, but I don’t know how much life it has left. It was built from used parts.
. The 700R4 has been sitting under another carport collecting more moisture than the engine.
. The NP208 and 700R4 were drained and refilled after the storm surge, and they were driven minimally over a period of a few years after, but the shape is unknown to me.
. He took the hood off the ‘82 and the engine bay has been literally sitting in the rain for several years. I worry about things such as the cruise control transducer, brake master and booster, and accessory drive which I would have to pull from that engine.
. The bed is more or less trashed on the ‘82, rusty and dented all to hell, and there’s no tailgate in the whole package.
. A lot of pristine trim pieces, almost NOS grade, have been sitting out there in the dirt, and you’d think they were trash. Hopefully they can be cleaned up.
. The old cab was never completely stripped so it’s not ready for assembly.

He’s telling me the 305 that he gave me that needs to be torn down and inspected/cleaned, the 350 that’s perched on the frame which needs to be torn down and inspected/cleaned, possibly rebuilt with better heads, and the 350 in the brown truck (which is blown) should add up to the $1500. He’s my brother, and I’d like to turn that crap pile into a truck, but I think this is a bit ridiculous. There’s a lot of assembly required, and that cab was a mediocre candidate for the swap because of the difference in how the two trucks were equipped. Feedback please! I like the idea of bringing things to life and saving trucks that don’t deserve to die, but I didn’t just fall out of the stupid tree. You can be as forthright as you want. I’m aware that he doesn’t give a **** about taking care of things/doing things right, and that this stuff is well on its way to being ruined if it isn’t already.

Opinion - look for another truck. Neither of you will be happy with the outcome, and it is not worth arguing with your brother over a square body, when there are still a shitload out there.

Unless there was something sentimental about it or it is super rare (sits not) then look for another truck.

Yeah, for that much of a headache, you could have kept the one you just punted on. There's no shortage of these trucks, the longer it takes to find the right one, means you'll have longer to set aside money for a better one.

Agreed. I just hate to see all those good parts out there rotting into the ground. The rust situation there is far better, but there’s a lot of crap to do. I need a truck bad, but maybe I’m too picky with what I’m looking for between trying to get a deal and how much I have to do.

I will tell you one thing the engine you posted a picture of is not a 350 4 bolt main. that's a small journal 327 or a 283.

in my book that's a 100 buck truck.

I'm throwing the BS flag. Without seeing a draft tube, or the old canister oil filter you cant tell from just looking at it.

I'd say that unless the time for labor means nothing you should pass, hell I could easily buy that pile but with my work schedule it would just be another stalled project like my 85 K10 that I keep buying stuff for.

Y’all are right. It blows my mind how you can already have that stuff, not work, not really do anything around the house or in school, and not be able to put that together.

How can you tell that from the picture provided? Really the only distinguishing feature visible is the square-headed pipe plug, but there were a lot of later blocks with those too.

Personally, I'd value a small journal 327 higher than a garden variety 350.

I’d have to pass. If everything there was in dry storage, it might be worth $2000 (maybe)? But you will be investing a boat load of effort to make that truck reliable and fun to drive.
I just finished up a project 10x easier than that one. It took more life and money than I had planned. It will be a part of the family so a while, LOL. Going to drive it, have fun, and not look back.

There’s still great rust free “projects” out there, good luck.

it has the small harmonic balancer. those didn't come on the large journal 327 or on any 350. I can't believe you guys didn't notice this. highdesertranger
