I put in a new diff and gears and now I have wheel hop bad. Seems too coincidental to blame it on anything else? I don't know if a loose pinion nut would cause that somehow?

Cal-Trac!!!!! My S10 had stupid wheel hop. I made my own based on their design minus the dampening part and they cured it.

Power, traction and springs/ride height all have a hand in it.

Mine doesn't hop at all. But it's geared tall, stock height, and no posi. So it just fries one tire long before it can gain enough traction to hop.

Can you elaborate a bit more? Did you put in lower gears and a posi unit? So now both tires will break loose instead of just one?

How are your shocks? GM supposedly put the rear shocks on the way they did to help prevent axle wrap which can lead to wheel hop. (one shock in front of axle, one behind). Maybe a better stiffer shock will be a good starting point.

Old: 3.08 open diff
New 3.73 positrac

I installed the diff and gears and then drove easy for a while (break in?) then went out and blew the shine off the tires (no hop just AWESOME) during the 4th "smoke release" it hopped and has done it ever since. My ear and butt are always monitoring for a weird feel or noise and Ive notice a "little" wandering of the rear end under hard accelleration at highway speeds. Maybe....

Wheel hop in squares is pretty uncommon so you must have the stars aligned just right.

How about on wet pavement? Any wheel hop on wet pavement? I'd try it on wet pavement and shouldn't have any wheel hop. Then once the tires are warmed up a bit, see what you get on dry pavement with warm tires.

A Super Duty Ford can wheel hop on wet pavement. It's annoying.

Is the truck lowered? Broke a leaf? Busted a shock?

Ok, that's fair. It can happen with some rigs. He has a C10 with a 350 though. If he has enough power to wheel hop with a posi, then it should blow away the tires with any amount of moisture. I think this could be a great thread, but there is too much info missing.

Going from one leg to posi, plus the gear change has massively changed your setup, @Biggin0822 . What kind of front shocks(for weight transfer)? Rear tire air pressures? Type of rear tires? Motor/head/cam/convertor/trans combo? Here's a big one- what's you rear diff pinion angle? Shim the leafs, so that points down, if your driveshaft is long enough. I do like Honkys advice about a traction device. There's just too much info missing to help out here though....

Oh yeah- how was it peg legged? Did you just fry one tire? Way different combo now with the posi and gears....

Of course. He said he just rebuilt the rear axle and was concerned about the pinion, so if the wheel hop is due to that build, then it's going to do it either on wet or dry pavement. So if it doesn't do it on wet pavement, then it eliminates that being the cause which I didn't expect that it would. Then, while the tires are warmed up, try it again on dry pavement since obviously with wheel hop, not going to get the tires hot on dry pavement.

you blazed the ties off 3 times with no issues the 4th time it hopped, does the engine still feel as strong as it did? Have you checked for broken springs, loose ubolts, missing shims etc?

Maybe he broke some chords in the tire and now it's egg shaped.
