I used to but my starters never lasted long, stopped using them and my starter last longer, is quieter, and starts faster

You don't use them by default, only if you need to in order to get proper clearance between the starter gear and the flywheel.

No shims needed. Put it in, fired her up and no funny noises. The old one would start the truck but made a bad sound when engine started running. Now starts right up!

The teeth have no clearance between them but oh well lol

The last starter I can remember installing was in my 1968 Power Wagon plow truck after I cleared 2 feet of snow from around it. Of course it was about 8:00 at night! Must have been 30 years ago!!

You only use the shims if you need to adjust the clearance. You want 1/8 inch between the flywheel and the shaft.

But what is your clearance with the current starter? Some starters just don't need shims. You might have also been getting crap starters.

Proper clearance is proper clearance. Too much will cause noise and kill starters, too little will cause noise and kill starters. Both can also hurt the flywheel. It's much more fact than it is opinion.
