Hmm, good info.
I'm thinking the front strap bolt may need cut by a 1/2" after I put on the tank. I will NOT be able to get to it once I put it up, and that will help tremendously.
I also caused some of my own problems with the trans jack.
FYI, I got to front strap bolt with long 18mm ratchet wrench, and just used wd40. Little at a time and determination. PB ran outta air, lol.
Passenger side will be different since both are accessible ( God willing ).
Yes, simple inexperience makes for turtle time.

do you mean too long to get a socket on it ? And as long as you have threads with it cut down you should be good, just thread nut on , cut it, then thread off, slip in, then thread on

My dad's a magician with a quadrajet, he does it all by ear and feel. We've verified afterward with an AFR on a couple of them and it's dead nuts perfect lol
Oooh. Jedi status. Don’t know if I’ll ever get there, haha.

The front drivers side sits above the frame, thus no hole (in frame). I can't get to (tried a lot) because the shield for the cat is there. I used pivot etc extensions bla bla.
Removing the poly shield did give more room to move the tank, but not enough and strap thread hung up over frame. Loosened with wrench and pry bar to koax tank came down.
Exactly to your statement. I may use a sacrificial nut to not damage the new one I'll leave on, even run a die if needed. Seems PITA. Passenger side should be better.

I recognize that green and black truck, from this forum? Oh, is that yours? Lol. I was thinking if I ever painted my own vehicle, like my 04 burb, I'd like to do something like that.

I go up with the tank straps on,so I'm installing tank with straps just snug and brackets installed. If for what ever reason your strap threaded end is too long you could cut it right there on the ground. It's not going to matter at all the nut is already installed and snug. If you are undoing the straps under the truck with the brackets installed, you are doing it the hardway. I have the straps just snug so I can shift them around still,to get my brackets lined back up with the frame, then another turn on the straps and they are done.

I am certain my experience will be similar. All the other ones have been. Power window motor, shocks. Changing the oil pressure sending unit was easy. When my drivers tank quit on me and I crawled under my truck to take the cover off my tank switching valve to trouble shoot. I was immediately not looking forward to figuring out where all the lines go when I actually do drop the tanks and replace. This is why I fret this job so much.

Yeppers, I think we're on the same page. I over think things too, so also just wanted to make sure IF I had to in the future I can get back down regarding the front strap thread.

It's easy, when you drop the tank, you are only dealing with 2 or 3 lines, depending on sender. You are going to cut your lines with pruning shears as soon as you have the brackets unbolted so you can move the tank. It's obvious where the lines go,they are different sizes. DO NOT forget to unbolt the tank grounding wire. Drop the tank with brackets and straps as a unit. Seriously its a 20 minute job.

Like all this stuff we get great info, but also it takes just doing it. Which is some of their point. Once I tear into it no longer is as intimidating. Valve diagram from resourse manual is correct.
I'm just glad there was enough gas in tank to let me know it didn't just run out of gas!
That would be imbarressing enough NOT to tell you guys.
Also, since I couldn't get gas out from down the fill tube (maybe a screen there?) I'll be doing that 1st.

Pruning shears worked great. I ✂️ the ground wire on drivers side. I can get to bolt now. :boxing:
What ARE the three sizes? I have 3/8" id and 1/4" on the way.

1/4, 5/16 and 3/8ths clamp them on the tank leave them long, have the second set of clamps on the hoses just tight enough they stay on going up. You can trim as needed once you are up. Use a 6 in one screwdriver with the tip removed as a nut driver to tighten the truck side clamps.

As to running out of gas and embarrassment. We had the unluckiest guy in the world come to our shop for awhile. Towed in,dead fuel pump,r&r pump, ship it. A day or 2 later he has it towed back it died on the road,no start. He ran out of gas,we told him all we did was hear the pump look at the gauge and add fuel. Pay for the tow and come get it. His wife brings him she is pissed because she didn't know it was just out of gas ,he didn't want her to know. They are arguing right in front of the shop he's standing with his hand in the door jam she's pissed that he paid the tow bill, slams the door and stomps towards her car,his fingers are slammed in the door, doors are locked we had to break in to open his door.Poor guy, he died very shortly after that he was a bicycle rider and got rear ended by a car.
