I started a project I have needed to tackle since I bought The '87. I was intimidated by this one, y'all can laugh if you want. It's not finished but I have had a long day and it will get done tomorrow morning.

It wasn't as bad as I feared. I didn't enjoy it but at least the stupid window goes up and down without assistance now. For some reason it never wanted to work when Mrs. Redfish was in the truck. I think her weight was causing the chassis to flex and bend putting the mechanism in a bind. :(

Getting the assembly out and back into that hole in the door is not nearly as bad as I feared. That part was actually easy.

There are several Youtube videos on how to do this. Most of them omit the part where you remove the shroud from the old motor and install it on the new motor. You have to drill the original fasteners. I used rivets to re-attach to the new motor which meant I had to drill/enlarge the holes in the new motor to accomodate.

Take pics of how everything attaches BEFORE you disassemble the motor from the regulator. Do keep in mind that the regulator is in a bind, there is a spring that wants to unwind. You need some method of keeping it from moving before you remove the motor.

Like you, I also fretted over this on my 87 but it turned out to not be that much of a PITA. A good opportunity to freshen up your door panels if need be!

Pulled the starter and found a wire nightmare. The po has old crusty electric tape and exposed bare wire in several places. Fck me!

I hate redoing wiring and it seems that I've had to do a lot of it on this truck. Noticed something different between the starters. One currently on it has one post on the solenoid and new one has two.

This has one wire splicing in on the pos battery cable and one to the one post on solenoid. Is this right. It worked fine until the wires got too bad.

Now if I hook this one up would I put the spliced wire into pos battery cable one one of the two post on this solenoid? Kinda confused about this.

Here's the wiring I got to fix. Not gonna be fun.

Noticed something different between the starters. One currently on it has one post on the solenoid and new one has two.

The second small terminal is for a vehicle with point ignition, not HEI. Usually marked with an "R", you don't need it. Leave it open.

Look at this $hit! I gotta go get some heavier wire and I'm gonna have the starter tested because I think it's OK and it's this terrible job the po did. Which is ok because the starter is not working without a good smack to the starter. I got great luck. Lol

The pos battery cable is also all jacked up on the end. Glad I got a new one.

Got the wires replaced and heat shrink wrapped at connectors. This looks much better. Thinking of stopping and cooking supper and have a couple of cold ones. Lol

Today I got the lower control arm off and bolted up the new tubular arm from OER. Was excited until I found out there’s some sort of fubar. I confirmed with Classic Industries that I had ordered the right parts, but the lower ball joint stud is too big in diameter, wrong taper and also is too short to get the castle nut on at all. I thought that maybe I had it upside down on accident but I was right. I now wish I was wrong.

Both the lowering spindle and the control arm are OER so no reason why they shouldn’t interface.

So I’m stuck in limbo for the unforeseen future. Sucks because I had the opportunity to get it all done this weekend and get the alignment scheduled next week.

My guess is that there was a run of wrong ball joints installed. No one knows on a Saturday. But when I called Class Industries today, they said that they are OER, and that that subsidiary manufactures all their parts. Sucks because CPP and QA1 are out of my price range.

I even tried to press out the ball joint with a rented press but they won’t come out- I don’t know how the **** they’re in there, but boy they’re tight. And I bought a couple of new ball joints and they fit right in the spindle without issue.

I remember the first time I did this. Didn't know any better so tried holding the glass with pliers. Then vacuumed the window out of the door and tried again after a trip to the wrecking yard!

I find it easier to pull the vent window and glass when doing stuff with the regulator/motor. It's a few minutes more to pull them but less fighting.

Put my old plug wire boots over the wires to protect from hedder heat.

Hooked up new battery cable after bolting starter back on. And now works like new. Had it tested at O'Reilly and big mouth lady in there said it passed but it sounded like it was bad TOO HER. I said I heard it spinning and it sounded fine to me. The kid testing it said it was hauling ass. Lol

She said it's up to you but I think it's bad. Just told her I'm taking and putting it back on. It will be fine. But she kept running her mouth tho. I almost said stfu and give me my starter back.

Saved $250 too. My mechanic told me that's what he charges for it. 2 hours labor. Glad I went ahead and did it myself. Wasn't that bad if I hadn't had to fix the wiring. That probably would have cost more for them to do it.

Went to check the oil this evening before going to dinner and there was NOTHING on the stick Was 2.5qts low. Also found I have a lot of suction on the oil fill tube, gotta figure out what’s causing that before I yank the motor. It’s also smoking some now, yay
