What one does it have? One took atf another took gear oil. Also depends if it's been rebuilt or not

The factory owner's manual does not specify type or capacity, it just says to fill it until it reaches the fill hole.

But it is 80W-90W gear oil. I believe mine took just over 4 quarts...but I don't remember exactly.

The transfer case took ATF.

Mitchell is usually pretty accurate. Might be a good idea to call a tranny shop before using a different fluid. Viscosity and composition of those 2 fluids are night and day.

I have an 84 K10 with the NP833 overdrive trans and ATF is what it requires.

I’m being told it’s a 4-speed Muncie.

That doesn't look like the sm465 to me. I don't have experience with the 833, so someone else will have to chime in. It doesn't look like the 465 imo.

Your pictures aren't.....great. It might be the 465, that big rib says 465.

@sqhead Your pics are...awful. However, I just crawled under my truck to verify and I am pretty certain that is the SM465. This probably sounds silly but could you take a pic of your shift knob? The shift patterns are different. I will amend my earlier statement. The SM465 requires 80W-90W Gear Oil. I will defer to others about the fluid used by the other transmissions, I have no experience with them. But I know what came out of my SM465 and I know what I put back into it. The transfer case does take Dexron ATF, but NOT the SM465 4 speed.

The SM465 has the "granny" low gear and the knob should look like this:

I’ll try to get some better pics of transmission. I can’t argue they are pretty bad pics.
