What did we do before cup holders?

Oh yea, I remember those days. And the memories are not pleasant. So....
The Mrs. and I kept looking for console with a couple cup holders, but none of them stirred us to buy.
So one day I fired up the old CAD system; Cardboard, Sharpie and scissors.
Now I really enjoy the "Motortrend" channel and some of those guys can really inspire and get the juices flowing. After a couple rough drafts and a couple more revisions a console is born. Synthetic canvas and 1/2" foam gives a soft welcoming look and feel. And the other surfaces got a couple coats of a rattle can textured paint.

I've been racking my brain on ways to add a cupholder on the door panel, but haven't figured out how to hold it without risking the weight breaking the panel and pulling a piece of it. Another issue is opening the door with the cup holder full and risking spilling whatever's in it. I mostly used the cupholder to throw in the keys, wallet, phone, vape, whatever. Currently using a double one behind the seat, but it's really awkward.

Here now-a-days it's just the Mrs. & I. And the grandkids have no interest in riding in the old truck so the console lives there now. Passengers have an 8ft bed to stretch out in.

That looks great I did the exact same thing with mine. I was really missing my arm rest too. I used my old headliner which didn't hold up too well but looked good for a while. I used boat cup holder for inserts. Which I bought later.

That looks great I did the exact same thing with mine. I was really missing my arm rest too. I used my old headliner which didn't hold up too well but looked good for a while. I used boat cup holder for inserts. Which I bought later.

The wife used that g/b door at drive-ins until I built the box. I could never reach it.

Got mine at Cupholdersplus. I found them years ago at a Tri-5 meet and bought one for my ‘57 so got another for my squarebody. Lid lifts for storage and doubles as arm rest. A strap secures it to the seat.

Factory fords in the 90s had stock cupholder options that mounted there, they had a bracket on the seat assembly(so no bucket seats had them, only bench) but the cupholder just clipped onto it. If you could fashion a way to secure a cupholder to the seat it would be able to move with the seat and not be in the way if you ever move it forward( a lot of squares have non-tilting seatbacks, and maybe different sized people drive the truck)
