As other posters have mentioned, in the short term, pop the hood.
I live in the country. Everything that is not driven daily, ie trucks outside, in the shop, tractors, ATVs, riding mowers, etc has the hoods raised. The hood doesn't need to be all the way up, but enough to allow some daylight and airflow.
No matter if you use cats, poison, or whatever, keep the hood open.

I like the hood pop method too. Springs are thankful for it. I've used tomcat occasionally. But Gota be careful with your own pets. But I really hate hood rats lol

Mothballs are effective too.
But they have to be replaced frequently.
And lights under the hood at night

I've employed two always hungry barn cats, one is 13lbs. the other 16lbs. Even though I feed them in the morning, several times a week they'll leave a DB near the back door. Well worth the investment.

We have had an infestation that has been problematic, chewed up the wiring harness on one of our newer cars before we even knew we had a problem. Some poison set around the perimeter helped and we also sprayed our engine bays with peppermint oil. Then we set to removing their food source, which the major one we found out was bird food.

We also used a product that was a perimeter spray that had garlic, clove and peppermint in it. All those things seem to have kept them at bay, but we have had to be extremely vigilant. YMMV.
