What's the story with the vertical silver strip in front of the tail lights?

It's a cut down longbed, those are just the scars. There's another right at the front of the bed

I see it now. Didn't notice before, that the front stake pockets were too far forward.

Mine is too. I wish I still had the middle stake pockets but they filled mine in and drilled them off the bedside. Would be useful to still have
