Taking off passenger head about 37 bolts so far

I thought for sure this thing would pop out after 37 or so bolts lol Lucky to have not stripped any thing

So do I have to take off the entire intake Tbi too to remove this thing?

Total labor hours are 11 hours and countless energy drinks but total labor of love I do not recommend doing this job on low sugar diet

Distributor, Throttle body, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, spark plugs. Dont forget to drain the anti-freeze. Then there is 17 head bolts, since you are counting. Why are you pulling the head off?

@Hugomartin Hine sight is 20/20 right. I'm not saying this to be a jerk, but if you did not know that the entire intake manifold has to come off before a head is pulled or that, it's really best to do whatever your doing to both heads (even if it's just a gasket), to prevent you from having to do the work a second time, then you'd serve yourself well to research a little better so you know what your getting into ahead of time. The cylinder head shape, and dowels will prevent it from coming off without entirely removing the manifold.

If you haven't drained the coolant, then you probably have a ton of it in the crankcase by now so be sure to change the oil, even if you have drained it still change the oil to be sure. You wouldn't want any debris from the job plugging up the pick up screen, or enough coolant in the crankcase to damage bearings.

Thank you for the heads up , yes plenty of coolant leaked out. It was a challenge getting the sockets snug on the bolt used up plenty of energy.


I openly admit i dont know what im doing , i just know remove all bolts and eventually ill get it out, was a bit bummed i need to take the intake off too.. Ican only imagine that this is 1k of labor already getting these bolts out thus far. Working on this truck is a serious workout day goes by real fast

pulling the head because of 20 psi or less compression on 4, 6 and 8 cylinders.... Also when it used to run id get oil shooting out of my dipstick while driving upwards of 50mph that could mean maybe a scored piston wall?

look ahead, in the future, you'll have the intake off in less than 30 minutes. Valve covers and exhaust about 20 minutes. That time will be cut in half the next time you have to do it cuz you've been there, done that.

Whatever you do to one head, do it to the other side as well as Sir @SirRobyn0 has said. Might even want to put the cheapest oil you can find in and run it for a bit then drain it and put the good stuff in when you know it's good to go.

You already have it this far, you should just go ahead and pull it out, tear it down and get it rebuilt, if necessary. Probably necessary. You will learn all about how it is put together and how it all works. It is much easier to work on a motor when it is out of the vehicle, on a stand. If it has low compression, there is probably other worn parts. Just a thought.

This is exactly right. @Hugomartin Guys do pull heads and fix a cylinder or two but it's completely the wrong way to do the job. You'll have all those other components in the engine that are worn out and will likely to cause you to have a laid up truck again soon.

Pull the engine and rebuild it properly. Better yet if you can afford it since you have some limitations, consider buying a rebuilt engine or having a professional go though yours.

Do I need to undo this fuel line but I got the tbi loosey goosey. I can’t yank the head off yet no budge at all maybe this is the last but holding it down pointing with my thumb ?

No. That's a pipe plug; some engines have a sensor or fitting that goes there.
